“It’s going to breathe a stepping stone,” says Walt Trombly, a union representative for the Utility Workers Union of Rhode Island. “The entire country is going to observe this.”
If the country likes what it sees, offshore wind could become a cornerstone of America’s bid to wean off fossil fuels. Proponents imagine a future where coastlines from the Carolinas to Maine are lined with thousands of turbines, siphoning energy out of fierce north Atlantic winds and delivering carbon-free power to millions. But not everyone wants that future, and even those who Do concede the enormous political, economic, and technological hurdles they exigency to overcome before it arrives.
It’s a glowing idea, that the solution to their oil and gas addiction is already at their fingertips. That, with a concerted effort, they could halt climate change by tapping the strong, sustained winds gusting just offshore—an endlessly renewable energy source.
The United States has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world. Some of the technology they exigency already exists. Not only Do Cape Wind’s opponents voice the project would cause significant “visual pollution,” they insist it will raise the cost of electricity rather than lower it. eventual year, after endless construction delays, Cape Wind lost its power purchase agreements with utility companies. Perhaps it’s no dumbfound that the first offshore wind farm to succeed where Cape Wind failed is much smaller, and addresses a much more glaring energy issue. Lacking a direct connection to Rhode Island’s power grid, the 1,000 year-round residents of the sleepy community of screen Island have, for decades, been forced to parch diesel fuel shipped over from the mainland—a nasty and extremely pricey pass of keeping the lights on.
Now that screen Island is producing power, it’s been integrated into the system. In June, utility company National Grid—which is buying electricity from Deepwater Wind and selling it to customers throughout the state—installed a submarine cable connection linking the wind farm and the nearby community to the mainland. The immaculate energy screen Islanders will start buying this month isn’t exactly a bargain: the first year power-price is 24 cents per kilowatt hour, compared with an mediocre of 14 cents per kilowatt hour throughout the state. But it’s about 40 percent less than the cost of diesel. They’re highly tuned, sensitive instruments.”
Matthew Morrissey, Vice President of Massachusetts for Deepwater Wind, says that the controversy over the screen Island Wind Farm is relatively small. After all, screen Island’s town council and resident’s association supported the project, as did recent Rhode Island governors, status senators, environmental groups, labor union leaders, and the Obama administration.
“Based on the Cape Wind experience, you’d contemplate there’d absorb been much more pushback,” he says. “I contemplate overwhelmingly, the citizens appreciated the cutting of the energy cost, the immaculate nature of their fuel source, and the fiber optic line that gave them expeditiously internet.”
At this point, only time will Tell if he’s right.

If the nacelle includes the brain and muscles of the turbine, the tower—an enormous metal tube built of three 200-ton sections of cast steel—is its backbone. The screen Island Wind Farm towers were assembled over the summer with the abet of fearless Tern, an aircraft carrier-esque Norwegian vessel that can hoist a gigantic crane hundreds of feet out of the water on four enormous stilts. With the blades in a safer configuration, Morrissey reckons they can withstand gusts of over 200 mph. “They’re insured, which says something,” he notes.
Under household conditions, electricity generated by a turbine is transmitted via cables down the length of the tower to the seafloor, then to a substation located on screen Island. From there, it’s supplied to the island’s residents and fed back into Rhode Island’s grid. As Catharine Bowes of the National Wildlife Federation points out, one turbine is needed to power screen Island, even at peak summertime usage (approximately 4 MW). “All of the surplus goes to the mainland,” she says.
How great that surplus is depends on how expeditiously the wind blows and how well the machines perform, something Deepwater Wind will breathe monitoring closely. On average, Kempton says, offshore wind operations Hurry at 45 percent capacity. If Deepwater Wind’s reticence to debate emergency evacuations is any indicator, I’m not the only one who finds the scenario a bit frightening.
“Three hundred local tradesmen worked on this wind farm,” says Scott Duhamel, a labor activist from Rhode Island’s edifice and Construction Trades Council with a thick Boston accent. For him, there’s nothing better than finishing a great construction project, and the turbines directly ahead of us are—quite literally—as great as they come. “For years, now, they regain to drive by and say, ‘I built that, I worked on that, I did that.’ The first one in America.”
A swell of pride at having planted the very first wind turbines in US waters was palpable among everyone I spoke with at on the recent screen Island Wind Farm tour, which was organized by wind energy supporters at the Rhode Island edifice and Construction Trades Council, the BlueGreen Alliance, and the National Wildlife Federation. So was a sense that the momentum generated here needs to breathe maintained. “We saw a job opportunity,” says Rhode Island senator Joshua Miller, who helped pass legislation that required utilities to buy Deepwater Wind’s electricity. “Whoever was first in this piece of America was going to set up the platform for [offshore wind] jobs.”
Job creation is often touted as a reason to champion wind energy, even if you don’t pervade about climate change. The reality is that switching to immaculate power at industrial scales is going to require industrial-scale manufacturing and development, such as we’re starting to observe in Europe, where most of the screen Island Wind Farm’s parts were built. The DOE estimates that an offshore wind industry could champion 600,000 original jobs on US shores by 2050.
To Jimmy Shillitto, Vice President for Local 1-2 Utility in original York, adaptation to the shifting energy landscape is inevitable. “Times are changing,” he says. “If they don’t regain involved, we’ll die off.”
Rhode Island may breathe first out the gates on offshore wind, but other states are poised to tangle up quickly. Over the summer, Massachusetts passed a bill that will require its utilities to purchase 1,600 MW of electricity from offshore wind farms by 2027. If the deal is approved, construction could start as soon as 2019.
As their boat crests around the craggy southeastern shore of screen Island, past cliffs and harbors dotted with picturesque original England homes, the turbines ebb from view. It's called the K15. Pictured above, at 31.6 lbs. (at least, according to my wife's bathroom scale, which of course, never lies), it is the lightest electric-assist bicycle of its type anywhere. I thought EV World readers would find it fascinating how it came to breathe and what my plans are for it.
EV World actually came into actuality because of an electric bicycle. In the summer of 1997, while visiting my local bank, I picked up an primitive copy of trade Week magazine and came across a two-page advertisement for the Warrior electric bicycle, a collaboration between Dr. Malcolm Currie and Malcolm Bricklin. Currie was the former head of Hughes Electronics and Bricklin, of course, is a serial automotive entrepreneur.
Intrigued, I wrote down the company URL and headed for my local library where they had an ISDN connection: at home, I was soundless using a 28.8 dial up at the time. I would expend the next couple hours learning about the world of electric vehicles, especially the exciting rollout of EVs in California. The M750 is soundless an Amazing e-bike. Its 750W rear hub motor is Ninja silent, something that was a revolution for its time in the early 2000s. Based on then state-of-the-art NiMH battery chemistry, it was and remains an Amazing technological feat. Unfortunately, the company didn't survive, but my M750 has. I soundless ride it.

About two years ago, I heard, via Hannes Neuport of ExtraEnergy in Germany, about the BIKE+ all-in-one motor by ZeHus s.r.l. Intrigued, I started a Skype conversation with Giovanni Alli, one of the co-developers, in Milan, Italy. In the back of my mind, I thought this was a motor that I could Do something with. Exactly what, I wasn't sure.
Over the following months, I kept in touch with Alli and the team at ZeHus, whose roots are in Milan Polytechnic University, periodically reporting on their progress via EV World's newswire.
Then eventual September, I attended Interbike in Las Vegas and had the desultory to actually try out the motor on the test track behind Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. I was immensely impressed, not only by the amount of torque and the regenerative braking feature that occurs when you back pedal the bike, but moreover the fact that you control the motor with your smartphone. Last Fall, I decided that I wanted to regain ahold of one of the motors to start testing it in the "real world." Riding around a flat track in Las Vegas isn't the selfsame as the hills here in my hometown. ZeHus agreed to sell me a motor with the understanding that it was for testing purposes and that I was intending to become a manufacturer.
They did me no favors on the cost: I'd paid the plenary charge for it since I was ordering only one unit. I arranged with my local bank to Do a wire transfer to Italy and had DHL airfreight to me. It arrived two days before Christmas.
While I was working on getting the motor, I was moreover looking for a suitable 'mule' on which to install the motor. At first I thought I'd just buy a cheap used bike off Craig's List or from one of a half dozen pawn shops around town. They always appear to absorb a stable of used bikes parked out front. I had previously read William McDonough and Michael Braungart's 'Upcycle,' The sequel of 'Cradle to Cradle,' they argue that with forethought they can actually create products that regain better when they are recycled, or "upcycled." It was about this time that I started to contemplate about an electric bicycle based on the upcycle principle. I even approached CocaCola with the feeling of creating electric bicycles from "upcycled" aluminum pop cans and renting them to tourists. The proposal never got past middle management, but the seed had been planted in my mind.
So, when I saw the Greenstar Ecoforce 1, I contacted Eric Hiller in Minneapolis and he agreed to sell me a bike at dealer cost. It arrived two weeks before Christmas.
My first tip-off that I had something special on my hands is when Fedex left the box, unannounced, on my front porch. Used to manhandling my M750 and other conventional, but a little lighter e-bikes sent to me to test, I expected this bike to breathe of similar mass. What I picked up was so light that at first I wondered if they'd sent me an bare box. At 20 lbs., the Ecoforce 1 weighs one-third that my M750 does.
Not only was it surprisingly light, it was just downright beautiful. I'd selected the green frame and wheels (the bike moreover is available in white and sky blue) but the green, to me, just sent totality the right signals. Against the warm, honey-toned bamboo, it is just stunning. As one person on my Facebook page commented, "It's not a bike. It's a toil of functional art."

Like most bicycles in the world, this one is made in China to Greenstar's specifications. It is solitary hurry with a hybrid configuration that blends mountain bike-style handlebars with a road bike-type frame. Its lines are immaculate and clutter-free. Now with both bike and motor now in hand, my next chore was to find a bike shop that would 'lace' the BIKE+ to the rear wheel. Originally, Sarah Johnson, the owner of Omaha Bicycle Company, agreed to Do it in her shop in Benson, but only if the motor arrived before her technician left on an extended bicycle tour across the American southwest. It did, but a death in the family compelled Sarah to near her shop on Christmas Eve. So, I picked up the bike and motor and eventually institute a shop that would pick on the project. Interestingly, a couple other shops I called refused to Do it on principle.
"We don't mount motors on bicycles," one of them told me, with a hint of indignation.
But one did, the Bike Rack in west Omaha. Their lead technician, Kelly Smith was terrific to toil with and before original Years he had the bike ready to go. Before they rolled it out of the shop, he weighed it. His scale said it was just over 32 lbs, or less an 15 kg. I'll approach back to the number in a minute.
I got the bike home, took a bunch of digital photos, especially of the motor mounting and emailed them to ZeHus. Almost immediately, I got a reply, asking me if I had installed the locking bracket that came with the motor.
No, I hadn't, I replied. Kelly thought the steel dropouts were plenty tenacious to champion the motor.
It is vital that the bracket breathe installed, ZeHus cautioned me. It is what makes their system work.
Okay. Back I went to the Bike Rack and few days later, Kelly called to voice he'd installed the required bracket.
Near as I can tell, and this piece is obviously proprietary, making inescapable that the motor can't torque under load is critical to the embedded software algorithms that control the system. In fact, when I installed the newest version of firmware on the motor, I had to insure that the bike was perfectly smooth during initial set up. I am guessing here, of course, but there must breathe an inclinometer in the motor that senses the bike's angle of height and uses that to determine when and how much electric assist to provide.
The BIKE+ motor operates in European pedelec mode, sense there is no throttle. You pedal the bike just fancy a regular bike and sensors determine, based your smartphone app setting, how much assistance to provide, ranging from plenary E-bike mode to no assistance.
