The 2TB HP EX950's superior random study, write, and combined workload efficiency allows the drive to load the eventual delusion: Stormblood tiers quicker than the different drives on the charts nowadays. the two next-gen NVMe SSDs wreck into the 13-second latitude whereas the other drives sum tumble in the 15-2nd range.
PCMark 8 total Storage Bandwidth
The PCMark 8 Storage examine makes exercise of 9 general applications to elope via ten exams that cowl a wide purview of purchaser initiatives fondness note, Excel, Photoshop etc. The applications exercise the four corners, random, sequential, diminutive and massive obscure sizes.
The HP EX950 gives you greater than a 2x performance multiply in throughput over the SATA SSDs and surpasses the two NVMe drives comfortably. The BPX seasoned, the only other subsequent-gen NVMe pressure in the verify follows carefully behind even though.
PCMark 8 extended Storage examine
The PCMark eight prolonged Storage verify uses the identical purposes because the typical test however preconditions the drives, and runs the functions a lot nearer together. within the restoration Phases, the examine uses a 5-minute idle time to intermission the workloads. This offers the drives time to role historical past rubbish collection.
under massive exercise in the abase and regular status phases, the 2TB HP EX950 trails the Samsung 970 EVO and mixes in with the different drives. With idle time in location to permit the drives to recuperate, the EX950 rapidly shoots to the precise of the performance latitude. This compel wasn't designed for notebook workloads, and that is the judgement pellucid within the extra annoying areas of the chart. it is a superb NVMe SSD for customer workloads.
SYSmark 2014 SE device Responsiveness and vim tests
The Responsiveness test comes from BAPCo's SYSmark 2014 SE suite and mimics a typical day of office work. the bottom rating of 1,000 comes from an o.e.m edition of the Samsung 850 EVO, a robust SSD for latency to birth with.
The previous technology HP EX collection outperformed every other NVMe SSD in 2018 and the unusual EX950 appears to achieve the equal in 2019. With so few next-gen 2TB drives transport these days, they can't certify the EX950 because the optimal 2TB pressure, but they are able to status or not it's the greatest they possess validated to date.
computing device Battery lifestyles
The computing device Battery life examine comes from BAPCo's MobileMark 2012 suite and uses an identical activities to the SYSmark examine. during this edition, they exercise a Lenovo Y700-17 gaming notebook with both SATA and NVMe support. The EX950 promises 324 minutes of battery lifestyles or rectify across the gauge for synchronous SSDs. The compel rankings greater than the other NVMe drives, however trails both SATA SSDs.
Prebuilt PCs possess been once the bailiwick of ridicule among fanatic gamers. HP hopes to change approved belief and the dialog in gaming circles with its newest Omen Obelisk.
This gaming computer aims extra austere gamers with points fondness Intel’s Core i7 or AMD Ryzen processors, quick HyperX RAM, not obligatory Intel Optane memory, and Nvidia’s latest GeForce RTX 2080 images. And the better portion is that this compact gaming laptop tower still comes with adequate inner region to assist future enhancements.
The Omen Obelisk has a modest sub-$900 soar fee, but you won’t exist impressed with those specs. Their upgraded $1,999 assessment unit comes is the one you want with its slick case, massive tempered glass window, and excessive-end accessories. You may exist surprised how a entire lot gaming goodness HP managed to pack into this kit.Understated appeal
even though it feasible gained’t attraction to gamers in quest of a flashier gadget, the Obelisk’s more demure aesthetics construct it hardy more conveniently into a house office setup. With its all-black steel construction, swish tempered glass aspect window, and subtle LED lighting, HP is obviously concentrated on home users who may exigency this computer to serve twin purposes for toil and play.Chuong Nguyen/Digital traits
until you’re able to spot the glowing LED-lit Omen brand on the proper of the pyramidal-fashioned Obelisk in the front or exist aware the glowing backlight throughout the glass panel, the Omen Obelisk can without problems pass as a common consumer laptop. HP doesn’t downplay the Obelisk’s Omen gaming heritage even though. It’s simply a trendy tower that foregoes the garish flourishes that are historically linked to gaming PCs.
With a designation fondness Obelisk, you’d are expecting HP’s computing device to tower for your desk. happily, that’s now not the case, as the Omen Obelisk is a compact computing device although it comes in a well-known tower configuration element. Their review unit helps a microATX Edoras motherboard and full-size photos card, helping to hold the typical footprint to a minimal for your desk. You nonetheless possess entry to an array of ports and a number of region internal the case for future upgrades.
despite a showy, un-tinted tempered glass window, there isn’t a distinguished deal visual pastime internal.
The Obelisk’s 6.5 x 14.1 x 17-inch (width x size x height) dimensions is comparable in measurement to the Asus ROG Strix GL12CX gaming computer, making both towers relatively compact for the RTX graphics energy that’s internal. The ROG merits, however, from a bigger ATX-sized motherboard and a more moderen processor however comes with a significantly greater costly $3,200 rate tag.
but if dimension is a priority, boutique gaming enterprise origin computer’s currently refreshed custom-built Neuron ships with a microATX motherboard with a ninth-Gen Intel Core i9 and beefier RTX 2080 Ti graphics. The Lenovo Legion C730 is smaller nevertheless, however that cooler-impressed notebook comes underpowered with final generation’s GTX images.beneath the looking glass
regardless of its un-tinted see-via aspect tempered glass window, there in reality isn’t a sterling deal visual pastime interior. fondness competing gaming systems, there’s configurable RGB lights, and the convenient cable administration device continues things geared up and tidy. but you received’t locate a elaborate RTX pix cards with glowing emblem or a flowery radiator.
where the glass panel design basically comes into play is on the upgraded Omen Obelisk configuration that turned into announced at CES 2019. This newer model tops out with a newer Intel Core i9 processor and more potent RTX 2080 Ti photographs. The eye-catching aspects from this mannequin consist of the radiator and pipes from the liquid cooling gadget, which should still back supply more visual activity for those who’re looking throughout the glass.
HP is clearly targeting people who may exigency this laptop to serve twin applications for toil and play.
For DIYers who want extra manage of their pcs, the EMI-lined glass panel can exist accessed devoid of tools. HP claims that the pellucid EMI coating helps to withhold away from any radio or magnetic interference. with the aid of pulling a latch on the rear of the tower, the side panel may furthermore exist straight away eliminated, giving entry to sum the internal add-ons. internal, you’ll learn entry to 2 RAM sockets, two M.2 sockets, full-height photos card, fan, tough pressure, and a 500-watt vigour supply unit (PSU). though the low watt ranking on the PSU may furthermore loom underwhelming given the RTX photographs card, they encountered zero considerations with this configuration.
however their build doesn’t Come with much when it comes to lively cooling, the Obelisk did exist able to retain temperatures in argue with strategically positioned vents along the rear, facets, and accurate. The bottom-installed PSU furthermore helps with heat dissipation, and two non-LED-lit lovers assist with air circulation. In use, the enthusiasts sounded slightly louder than some competing top class gaming PCs that we’ve confirmed in the past. There’s additionally a filth filter, which turns out to exist useful to preserve things searching pellucid you probably possess a great see-through glass panel.
The tower helps a number of leeway for enlargement, if you exigency to swap in a beefier PSU or determine to upgrade to a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti card sooner or later. RAM and storage are each quick enhancements. The Omen Obelisk additionally ships with HP’s USB keyboard and mouse, but captious gamers will both deliver their personal peripherals or ameliorate the inventory accessories.Reachable ports
The Omen Obelisk includes two arrays of ports to advocate you connect your video display, keyboard, mouse, and different peripherals. Mainstays, just fondness the vim cable, parade output, and speaker connection, can exist plugged into the rear. 5 USB 3.1 ports, a solitary USB-C port, HDMI, and three DisplayPort connections, Ethernet jack, and audio ports line the returned of the unit.Chuong Nguyen/Digital tendencies
On this era of the Omen Obelisk, HP redesigned the desirable ports with a entrance-dealing with design for less complicated entry. On the prior generation, the Obelisk turned into designed with rear-facing ports, making for a sleeker and cleaner design at the cost of port accessibility. Up good, you’ll learn two USB three.1 ports, headphone jack, microphone jack, and the vim button.Priced to operate
In a circulation to hold charges down, and likely in a rush to release the Obelisk sooner to game enthusiasts, HP opted not to wait for Intel’s newer 9th-generation processors. as a result, the Omen Obelisk gadgets that shipped in late-2018 got here with 8th-generation Intel processors. Their overview device got here configured with an Intel coffee Lake Core i7-8700 CPU with six cores and 12 threads.
The slower efficiency of Intel’s previous era processor is apparent, despite the fact, when working processor benchmarks. The Omen Obelisk posted lessen single- and multi-core rankings than competing techniques that exercise ninth-generation Intel Core i9-9900K processors, fondness the origin Chronos, Digital Storm Aventum X, and Asus ROG Strix GL12CX. in comparison to the Alienware enviornment-51 R5’s Intel Core i9-7980XE processor, the Obelisk posted blended effects, scoring seven hundred aspects bigger on the only-core test and more than three,000 facets lessen on the multi-core peer at various. once they used Handbrake to encode a sample 4K movie, the examine performed 38 p.c faster on the ROG than the Omen Obelisk.
And even though their unit comes with a 512GB M.2-format strong-state drive made by course of SK Hynix, the power become on the slower side, with 664 Mb/s study and 448 Mb/s write speeds. These speeds are slower than competing Samsung, Toshiba, and Western Digital Drives on different instruments we’ve reviewed, fondness the Aventum X, Microsoft surface Studio 2, and Huawei MateBook 13. It’s even slower than the Lenovo Legion C730, which comes with a smaller 256GB SK Hynix SSD.
There’s additionally a 1TB difficult compel on this device, and clients who exigency more storage capacity can add a 3rd power. both challenging drives are with no anxiety available within the tough pressure bays, and swapping out the M.2 SSD is a simple project, handiest requiring unscrewing a solitary Phillips-head screw.Ray tracing ready gaming
happily, regardless of a minute slower processing speeds relative to synchronous rivals, the Obelisk remains competitive within the graphics branch, thanks to its Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 photographs. nonetheless, regardless of sharing a similar images card as the Asus ROG Strix GL12CX, the Omen Obelisk performed just a minute worse throughout 3DMark Time covert agent, Sky Diver, and fireplace Strike tests. both instruments’ rankings had been similarly lower than the origin Chronos, which is to exist expected considering that the Chronos ships with an RTX 2080 Ti card. With 3DMark’s unusual Port Royale benchmark, which measures ray tracing, the Obelisk scored 5,598 elements with a unvarying of 25.ninety two FPS (frames per 2nd).
In their gaming checks, the Omen Obelisk once again delivered similar efficiency degrees as different programs with Nvidia’s RTX 2080 photographs. In prevalent, marks across the board in titles fondness Civilization VI, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Battlefield I, and Rocket League had been to some extent lower on the Obelisk than the starting spot Chronos.
In Battlefield I, Civilization VI, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the Obelisk delivered smartly over 60 FPS across sum video game settings, even in 4K decision. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided at 4K in ultra mode, there became a noticeable douse in efficiency, however the Obelisk performed 10 FPS more suitable than the Asus ROG Strix GL12CX’s 39 FPS outcome regardless of both methods sharing equivalent pix playing cards. This shows that even with an ageing eighth-gen Intel processor, the Obelisk turned into nonetheless in a position to withhold up with competitors running more moderen 9th-gen silicon.
Given the consistently astonishing performance of the Obelisk, game enthusiasts may furthermore now not word a lot of a efficiency gap, even with an older processor. In popular, they discovered that the RTX collection photos delivered extra constant consequences throughout 1080, 1440p, and 4K resolutions than the older GTX series, which confirmed a slowdown in framerates at bigger resolutions.
With the true-time ray-tracing enabled on Battlefield V, they noticed that the game seemed more simple, and they appreciated the delivered flush of details. The feature, although, does tax the gadget at better resolutions, and there’s a well-known douse in performance when ray-tracing is cranked to “extremely” in 4K resolution. With ray-tracing off and HDR enabled, the game performed on ordinary between fifty six to 59 FPS in 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions at approximately 60Hz. When ray-tracing is enabled, framerates remained consistent at lessen 1080p and 2K resolutions, however in 4K, efficiency in the “Nordlys” mission dropped to simply 32 FPS.assurance
HP presents a typical one-yr off-site guarantee masking ingredients, labor, and shipping charges to forward the unit to a restore center. gamers who want longer peace of repartee can opt for an upgraded two-yr guarantee for $239 or a two-12 months contrivance with fortuitous damage insurance policy for $279. The latter covers unexpected movements, fondness water spills and even drops, which may Come in handy if you find yourself commonly toting the Obelisk to LAN parties.
HP’s foundation one-12 months assurance falls in line with what mainstream manufacturers, fondness Dell’s Alienware and Lenovo’s Legion offers, however these opponents tender longer top rate packages that may lengthen the insurance policy of your device for as much as 5 years. extra costly build-to-order methods from boutique manufacturers fondness origin computing device and Digital Storm include a foundation three-12 months confined assurance. Our Take
HP made some sacrifices to rush the Omen Obelisk out on the conclusion of 2018, and this means that the unit doesn’t excellent out with the most excellent CPU or GPU on the best configuration. still, at a sub-$2,000 cost element, the Obelisk’s eighth-Gen Intel – in preference to the more recent ninth-Gen silicon – processor and RTX 2080 snap shots does a commendable job at coping with framerates in game play.
In their benchmarks, they discovered that HP’s determination to evanesce together with Intel’s closing era processor didn’t possess lots of an possess an repercussion on on gaming performance. And until you’re pushing the gaming envelope with ray-tracing titles at the optimum video game settings at 4K resolutions, going with the Obelisk’s RTX 2080 pics, as a substitute of the flagship RTX 2080 Ti will feasible prevent slightly of money, as efficiency with ray-tracing enabled generally simplest dropped at resolutions more suitable than 1440p.Is there an improved option?
in case you’re okay with Intel’s eventual era processors, HP’s Omen Obelisk is terribly within your budget for its requirements. Asus’ competing ROG Strix, as an example, costs about $1,200 more than the Obelisk at $3,299. At that fee, you’re getting a more recent 9th-era Intel Core i7-9700 processor. Dell’s Alienware area-51 desktop costs the same rate as the ROG Strix, however you’re getting an eight-core Intel Core i7-7820X processor, 16GB RAM, and 128GB M.2 strong-state drive coupled with a 1TB tough power.
Boutique workstation brand soar computing device’s Chronos laptop additionally is available in a in a similar vogue compact package. When configured with an Intel Core i7-9700K processor and an RTX 2080 pictures card, the foundation starts at $2,432, which is a $four hundred top rate over the Obelisk. foundation offers course more customization alternate options if you want to trick out your rig, however the Chronos doesn’t Come with HP’s single-pane window design.
in case you’re a greater captious gamer, you’ll wish to peer forward to the 2019 edition of the Omen Obelisk that HP introduced at CES. The 2019 Obelisk continues the equal aesthetics and design as their evaluate unit, however the more suitable configuration maxes out with more recent Intel Core i9 processor, enhanced RTX 2080 Ti portraits, and a radiator for liquid cooling. This up-to-date mannequin is anticipated to deliver greater energy for computational initiatives and better gaming efficiency. It’s slated to arrive in March starting at $2,249, so pricing on the 8th-gen Intel configuration may drop at that time.
HP Omen Obelisk compared toHow lengthy will it remaining?
regardless of which configuration you settle on, the HP Omen Obelisk will fulfill your gaming needs for years to come. sum the inside accessories are upgradeable, and in case you determine on an RTX sequence images card, you’re buying a future-proof computer. The problem for most game enthusiasts who buy this and other RTX-outfitted device is expecting developers to add usher for ray tracing into their titles, and that system can capture a long time.for those who purchase it?
yes. in case you don’t possess the long-suffering to source your personal components to construct your own workstation, HP’s Omen Obelisk is a sterling pre-built option that’s cost efficacious and neatly outfitted to convey the efficiency most gamers need. although it’s a gaming tower that’s focused at mainstream gamers, it’s bought ample facets – ease of upgrade, RTX vigor, and a latest design – that makes this desktop appealing to the enthusiast.

Four trends are accelerating end-user adoption of clustered storage and file virtualization.
By Steve Norall
—Clustered storage is an understanding whose time has finally come. For the past decade, the concept of a "pay-as-you-grow" resource with unlimited scalability has been an elusive vision of End users and vendors alike. However, with the events of the past five years, clustered storage has matured as a crop of nimble, innovative start-ups possess proven that they are capable of delivering on many of the promises of the initial concept.
Clustered storage architectures possess wide sweeping implications for sum types of storage systems, including both block-based (Fibre Channel and iSCSI) and file-based (NFS and CIFS). At present, clustered storage architectures possess largely gained traction in two divide markets—iSCSI and NAS.
This article focuses primarily on clustered file storage systems, a market represented by vendors such as BlueArc, Exanet, Ibrix, Isilon, Hewlett-Packard (via PolyServe), Network Appliance (via Spinnaker Networks), ONStor, Panasas, and Red Hat (via Sistina Software) that are pioneering the concept of clustered file storage.
Problems with monolithic NASTraditionally, major NAS vendors possess adopted a scale-up approach to delivering performance and capacity. For their main filer lines, both Network Appliance and EMC exercise a single-head design connected to a set of physical disks. This monolithic approach means that sum I/O to a given file system must exist processed by a solitary head that resides in the data path. To scale, NAS vendors sold bigger, more-expensive monolithic NAS systems that could maneuver higher I/O rates and capacity. However, this scale-up model creates three core problems:
It's difficult to scale the data path: A traditional single-head NAS system can deliver at best 250MBps of I/O throughput to a solitary file system. However, with consolidated workloads and unusual distributed applications that require more than 250MBps of throughput, traditional NAS systems hit a performance wall. To scale performance further, data must exist manually distributed across multiple filers. However, by doing this, administrators lose a key benefit: the skill to manage sum file data under a solitary namespace. Therefore, to entangle the required performance, administrators must sacrifice manageability of their overall unstructured data environment—a jagged minute pill for most to swallow.
High-capacity systems are costly and unwieldy to manage: Each filer has limits on how much capacity can exist accessible by a solitary system. Therefore, if data grows faster than expected, administrators may exigency to achieve a "forklift upgrade" and purchase a larger, more-expensive NAS system to meet increased capacity requirements. This forklift upgrade approach not only causes downtime as the system is upgraded and data is migrated, but it furthermore requires great up-front capital expenditures, instead of small, incremental capacity purchases.
No economies of management across filers: NAS filers are generally effortless to exercise and operate. However, no matter how effortless a system is to manage, as the number of filers proliferates in a data center, the amount of administration increases proportionately. Each filer introduces a divide namespace and set of file data that must exist provisioned, protected, replicated, and maintained individually. Hence, a common user abstain is: "I loved my first filer, but hated my tenth."
Enter clustered storageClustered file storage addresses the drawbacks associated with monolithic NAS systems. Through the exercise of advanced file systems, clustered storage systems aggregate the performance and capacity of a set of disparate controllers and physical disks to create a single, scalable, fault-tolerant NAS resource. An outgrowth of this approach is that the system presents a solitary shared namespace accessible via common file access protocols, such as NFS, CIFS, and HTTP. The clustered storage system's namespace provides a solitary file and directory structure for sum unstructured data to exist centrally managed.
Clustered storage offers four key advantages over traditional monolithic storage:
Four trendsA number of trends point to a knowing future for clustered storage:
New classes of clustered computing architectures require the scalability of clustered storage. One of the more spirited developments in the eventual five years is the rapid soar of clustered and distributed applications. Traditionally, to scale a system, IT would elect to scale up by purchasing a larger, more-powerful server to deliver higher levels of computing horsepower. However, monolithic servers possess given course to scale out approaches for many applications in the data center.
Examples of clustered computing architectures include Web applications, consolidated and virtualized server environments, and technical computing applications.
With the soar of the Internet, Web-based applications possess replaced client/server as the predominant application architecture. Moreover, the Internet enables a flush of scalability and reliability previously unimaginable. Storage systems must exist able to maneuver thousands of concurrent users, expand seamlessly to advocate hundreds of online terabytes, and meet 24x7 uptime requirements.
Second, through the exercise of server virtualization tools such as VMware, IT has consolidated underutilized servers and their applications onto a centrally managed pool of servers running multiple virtual operating environments. As the scale of these virtual environment increases, the performance, availability, and cost-efficiency of the storage infrastructure become crucial to enabling the next flush of scalability. And virtual server environments require low-latency, high-performance storage systems.
Third, technical computing applications possess crossed over from scientific research organizations to become core mission-critical applications liable for key trade functions. These clustered computing applications loosely pair potentially thousands of cost-effective x86 servers together to amass tremendous amounts of computational performance. Examples of these applications abound across a wide variety of industries—econometric and Monte Carlo simulation clusters in fiscal services, blight clusters in biosciences, seismic processing applications in oil and gas exploration, video rendering in movies and TV production, and CAD/CAM applications in manufacturing. Most technical computing applications are ravenous consumers of storage capacity and I/O throughput, making monolithic NAS systems a poverty-stricken fit.
The common theme among these clustered computing applications is that they must partake data and that the performance of the storage is a key to the overall responsiveness and throughput of the application. In short, monolithic storage systems cannot meet the high-throughput demands, foible tolerance, and seamless capacity scaling capabilities that these unusual class of applications require. As these distributed and clustered applications possess gained a foothold in corporate data centers, they possess caused IT to rethink their storage architectures. Vendors such as Isilon possess ridden this wave effectively. For example, Isilon initially focused on applications such as video rendering and video production before branching out to oil and gas exploration, large-scale Web and media streaming, and digital archiving.
Consolidating file servers onto clustered storage delivers proven ROI: One out of five Windows servers shipped today is dedicated to file and print serving, and more than 50% of sum NAS devices shipped elope Windows. These servers and devices are proliferating at the department and workgroup flush of great enterprises. As a result, enterprises are waking up to the exigency to gain visibility and tighter controls over these systems and their file data. File server consolidation has emerged as a course to reduce overall management and gain greater control over scattered unstructured data resources. End users that they possess spoken with possess reported ROI of between 30% and 50% after completing a file server consolidation initiative.
Clustered storage systems are excellent consolidation solutions because they provide a modular, scalable, fault-tolerant platform for collapsing many file servers into a solitary management point. However, not sum clustered systems are well-suited for consolidation. Typically, the solutions that stand out possess strong integration with Microsoft technologies such as dynamic Directory and Windows authentication, as well as a strong CIFS implementation. ONStor is an illustration of a vendor that meets these criteria, while blending file virtualization technologies such as a global namespace and virtual servers to back End users consolidate disparate file servers. For example, using ONStor's virtual server capabilities, each physical file server to exist consolidated can exist represented as a virtual server. As a result, clients are unaware that there possess been any changes to the underlying file serving infrastructure, and administrators avoid namespace collisions (e.g., when multiple file servers with the same root directory designation are collapsed together).
Clustered storage has been validated by Tier-1 vendors: Initially, diminutive innovative start-ups pioneered the concept of clustered storage. However, over the past three years, larger vendors such as Network Appliance and Hewlett-Packard embraced the concept of clustered storage through high-profile acquisitions and OEM deals. These moves possess given credence to the concept of clustered storage and signaled to End users that the technology is ready for enterprise deployment.
In 2003, Network Appliance became the first Tier-1 storage vendor to acquire advanced file system, namespace, and clustering technologies with its acquisition of Spinnaker Networks—an early pioneer in the clustered storage space. After a long and arduous integration process with its core WAFL file system, advanced software capabilities, and FAS hardware platforms, NetApp began shipping Data ONTAP GX in mid-2006—a clustered version of its Data ONTAP operating system.
HP realized it needed a game-changing approach if it aspired to dethrone EMC or Network Appliance in the enterprise NAS market. To that end, HP acquired PolyServe in April 2007 and used PolyServe's cluster file system to create a scalable NAS offering using gauge HP ProLiant servers and EVA and XP storage systems.
However, despite these acquisitions, no Tier-1 storage vendor has yet to fully capitalize on the plenary value proposition that clustered storage enables and establish market leadership. Network Appliance appears to exist doing a "soft roll" of the Spinnaker technologies for dread of cannibalizing its main filer business, and as a result has focused the Data ONTAP GX offering primarily on specific technical computing markets. Meanwhile, HP is still in the process of integrating PolyServe's technology with its existing products. The result is that even though several Tier-1 vendors possess embraced the concept, a pellucid winner—or winners—has yet to emerge. Meanwhile, several of the smaller, agile vendors are accelerating revenues and customer wins as the larger vendors struggle with internal issues.
Clustered storage is closing the enterprise feature set gap: One of the main drivers for purchasing a traditional single-head NAS system was that it came with a moneyed set of integrated data protection, storage management, catastrophe recovery, and compliance capabilities. Advanced storage management capabilities such as snapshots, quotas, asynchronous mirroring, thin provisioning, and write-once, read-many (WORM) functionality possess become "must-have" capabilities for many enterprises. However, many of the early incarnations of clustered storage products did not possess these capabilities. Therefore, despite their obvious architectural advantages, clustered storage was often eliminated from consideration for core data-center deployments.
However, the picture is now changing. Several clustered storage vendors possess added these "must-have" enterprise-level features. Vendors such as BlueArc, Isilon, ONStor, and others tender many of the core data protection (e.g., snapshots) and disaster-recovery (e.g., asynchronous and synchronous replication) features expected in an enterprise NAS product. As clustered storage offerings gain feature parity with traditional NAS systems, end-user adoption will ramp rapidly.
RecommendationsGiven the rapid innovation and conflicting product claims in the marketplace, it can exist difficult for End users to determine which clustered storage solution is best for their environment. Their counsel to users evaluating these solutions is to assess vendors and products on three key dimensions.
First, users should not adopt a "one-size-fits-all" approach to clustered storage. Users should recognize that the application and I/O workload should drive the selection of the confiscate clustered storage offering. Administrators should create I/O and data-access profiles for their applications and match them to the capabilities of clustered storage candidates. Different architectures are optimized for different I/O access patterns, amount of files, and file sizes. For example, some vendors possess tuned their systems for great block, sequential I/O access, and great file sizes, while other solutions are better-suited for diminutive block, random I/O patterns and diminutive files.
Second, users should evaluate protocol requirements. Some NAS systems are best-suited for NFS data access, while others outstrip in CIFS performance.
Finally, if pursuing a file server consolidation project, users should evaluate vendors on the breadth and depth of their file virtualization capabilities. Specifically, users should peer for products that possess global namespaces that can exist extended to include heterogeneous file servers and virtual server capabilities that prevent namespace collisions in a consolidation project.
With proper evaluation, users should exist able to match their specific requirements to the features and functions of clustered file storage systems.
Steve Norall is a senior analyst with the Taneja Group research and consulting firm.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. updated its storage portfolio today with a unusual EVA midrange SAN array, a set of pre-packaged storage and compute bundles tuned for virtual environments, and a unusual Windows-based NAS. The company furthermore laid out plans for a building-block approach to future data storage products that would involve more bundling of its storage, server and networking products.
The launch came during the opening day of HP’s learn 2011 user divulge in Las Vegas. HP didn't upgrade its flagship 3PAR storage platform that it paid $2.35 billion to acquire eventual year, although 3PAR storage is included in one of its unusual VirtualSystem bundles.EVA gets thin provisioning, but not 3PAR’s
The HP P6000 EVA will possess thin provisioning and indigenous iSCSI advocate for the first time, as well as advocate for 2.5-inch 6 Gbps SAS drives and LUN-level tiering for data migration. Two unusual models -- the P6300 and P6500 -- supplant the P6400 and P8400 models, but the software that enables thin provisioning, tiering and iSCSI advocate will exist available to existing EVA customers.
The P6500 scales to 480 TB with 2 TB SAS drives, while the P6300 scales to 240 TB. The other major inequity is that the P6500 uses 8 GB of cache vs. 4 GB for the P6300. Both are two-controller systems.
HP revealed in May that it would refresh the EVA this month, amid speculation it would assassinate the platform after acquiring 3PAR. Tom Joyce, vice president for marketing, strategy and operations for HP storage, said the 10-year-old EVA platform has 100,000 customers, and “a lot of those customers possess been looking forward to a refresh for quite a while.”
Joyce said many EVA customers want a system that's effortless to exercise and less expensive than 3PAR, comparing 3PAR to a Ferrari or Mercedes and the EVA to a pickup truck. He said EVA thin provisioning leverages “expertise” from HP’s 3PAR and LeftHand platforms but its code is unique to the EVA. “EVA customers wanted thin provisioning and tiering, but not in a course that was challenging. EVA is stripped down to its essentials,” Joyce said.
Joyce said the P6000 EVA will advocate solid-state drives (SSDs) later this year, but the EVA doesn't advocate automated sub-LUN tiering that competitors EMC, Dell (through its Compellent acquisition) and IBM, or even HP’s 3PAR, provide for efficient placement of data on SSDs.
A year ago, HP launched the EVA Cluster that connected two EVA arrays with the Storage Virtualization Services Platform (SVSP) product HP sold through an OEM deal with LSI. But at the End of 2010, HP discontinued the EVA Cluster and SVSP. “We didn’t entangle a distinguished response,” Joyce said of that product. “That didn’t maintain the EVA’s value around simplicity.”VirtualSystem: An retort to Vblock?
HP sees its VirtualSystem bundles as competitive to the EMC-Cisco-VMware Vblock bundles for virtual environments and storage clouds. The bundles are based on HP storage and servers, including the BladeSystem Matrix Converged Infrastructure systems that packages servers and networking as an retort to Cisco Systems’ Unified Computing System (UCS).
There are three VirtualSystem bundles. The smallest uses HP ProLiant servers, LeftHand P4500 SANs and HP Virtual Connect switch modules. The medium-sized bundle includes P4800 LeftHand storage running on an HP BladeSystem server with Virtual Connect and the largest bundle is a BladeSystem with 3PAR storage. The high-end system includes Fibre Channel SAN switches from Brocade.
The bundles include VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor software. They can furthermore exist upgraded to HP Cloud System packages to create hybrid clouds.Midrange Windows-based NAS
HP is furthermore introducing an HP X5000 G2 Network Storage active-active NAS system based on Windows Storage Server (WSS). It's HP’s first multi-node product built on WSS, and it furthermore supports iSCSI. The X5000 uses the same hardware as the HP E5000 Messaging System for Microsoft Exchange that HP launched earlier this year based on ProLiant blade servers.
“This is bringing Windows NAS to the midrange,” Joyce said of the unusual X5000.
In addition, HP upgraded its X9000 NAS system that uses a clustered file system acquired from Ibrix in 2009 and said it will no longer sell software it acquired from PolyServe with the X9000. After buying Ibrix, HP continued to construct NAS systems available with PolyServe for high-performance markets; it will now exercise Ibrix with sum its clustered NAS.
“We want to focus on things that are game changers or winners,” Joyce said.
HP is furthermore adding snapshots and WORM file locking for data retention to the XP9000. “We didn’t possess the things you needed to evanesce after broader-based opportunities,” Joyce said.Storage360: More bundles coming
Joyce said HP will add more products based on its storage pile blocks plus Converged Infrastructure as portion of what it's calling its Storage360 architecture. Storage360 consists of LeftHand, Ibrix and HP's StoreOnce deduplication software merged into a common platform.
“They came from different places, but over the eventual 18 months we’ve taken the underpinnings of those three products and moved them to a common platform,” Joyce said. “In the future, they will elope BladeSystem with Ibrix and LeftHand software in the same box. We’ll furthermore build a great deduplication facility into Ibrix. First, they had to entangle these things running on common code.”
HP launched StoreOnce for its low-end disk backup appliances in 2008 and eventual year said it would exist expanded for other HP products. It remains relegated to backup, but Joyce said he expects an announcement of StoreOnce on other platforms late this year.
He said HP is furthermore dropping the StorageWorks brand from its storage products. Is it enough?
Like other server vendors, HP has been losing storage market partake to pure-play storage vendors EMC, Hitachi Data Systems and NetApp. The latest IDC storage tracker numbers released eventual week divulge HP with 10.5% of the external storage market eventual quarter. HP grew 16% year-over-year compared to NetApp’s 38%, Hitachi Data Systems' 27% and EMC’s 25% revenue increases.
Analysts question whether modest EVA enhancements and bundles of existing products can back HP invert the tide.
“HP has [less than] 11% of the external storage market. Compared to everywhere else HP competes, that’s miserable,” said outcome Peters, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “That tells you HP’s not even getting its far partake among people who buy their computing products. HP has to entangle some better perception around its storage. I don’t cerebrate adding blocks of compute will change the storage success of HP. I’m assuming if you fondness HP, you’ll fondness VirtualSystem, if you fondness EMC you’ll buy Vblock, and if you fondness NetApp you’ll evanesce with FlexPod.”
Jeff Boles, a senior analyst and director, validation services at Taneja Group, said the VirtualSystem architecture isn’t completely unusual for HP because it already sells LeftHand systems on ProLiant and BladeSystem servers.
“It’s spirited to remark HP throwdown wholeheartedly with its converged infrastructure,” he said. “That started with LeftHand, and it’s gone well. I cerebrate that’s influenced their thinking for this building-block approach.
“It’s spirited to remark them deploy so much on blade server and rack servers," Boles added. "It’s easier to scale storage when it’s in the rack. When you possess different configuration factors for storage and servers and manage them separately, it introduces latency and inefficiencies.”
Boles said HP’s EVA upgrade “came as a dumbfound to everybody” after the 3PAR acquisition but should construct EVA customers happy. “There are a lot of shops out there running a lot of EVAs,” he said. “I know people with 15 or 20 of them, and it would exist a gargantuan application to supplant sum of them.”
