The enabling technologies of commerce intelligence and data warehousing are playing a vital role in facilitating strategic corporate and organizational initiatives, such as customer relationship management and e-commerce worldwide.
The enabling technologies of commerce intelligence and data warehousing (BI/DW) are playing a vital role in facilitating strategic corporate and organizational initiatives, such as customer relationship management and e-commerce, worldwide. Evolving CRM application areas, such as customer lore management (CKM), are viewed as key technology solutions for not only understanding customers, but for maintaining corporate competitiveness and increasing revenue.
One of the fastest growth areas in the BI/DW market is the data warehousing of ERP data, and Web-enabling ERP information to facilitate business-to-business, and business-to-consumer e-commerce. BI/DW technologies will moreover play an notable role in the evolution of lore management platforms and what are now being called enterprise information portals (EIP). Although there is currently limited data, and/or primary research to back the actuality of an EIP market (the majority of assumptions in this article are based on DBS III, a worldwide survey of data warehouse implementers that was completed during the tumble of 1999), the concept of an enterprise portal with access to multiple data sources and information is sound.
The commerce factors driving data warehousing and commerce intelligence projects include:
Affordable Data Warehousing with Microsoft or Linux?
The overall cost of data warehousing and enterprise software licensing are key issues for organizations that are providing mainstream user access to the data warehouse/data mart. These are moreover notable issues for organizations that are beginning to transition from client/server to distributed computing architectures that enable concurrent employ and Internet access.
As with any early majority market, in the coming years many great enterprises will attempt to standardize on a unique BI/DW vendor in order to reduce up-front cost and overall maintenance and administration. Small- to mid-sized organizations will quest affordable and tightly integrated BI/DW solutions that deliver immediate ROI, such as Microsoft's SQL server platform, and/or Linux with IBM's DB2 or Oracle. If Microsoft delivers a stable, liable operating system in Windows 2000, the SQL server platform will provide an affordable and easy-to-implement commerce intelligence and data warehousing solution that will radically change the landscape of the BI/DW market.
The combination of inexpensive Intel hardware, along with built-in OLAP and data transformation services, and a highly functional outdo front quit and pivot table services, will subsist a very attractive, easy-to-implement BI/DW solution for many organizations.
If Microsoft fails to deliver a stable OS in Windows 2000, they foretell that Linux (which is already 64 bit), with the back of the major DBMS vendors, Oracle and IBM, could become an notable platform for the DBMS and data warehousing. On the contrary, it is not limpid if Linux will tolerate the ascetic impact; Microsoft and UNIX vendors may, indeed, tolerate the brunt of this disruptive technology.
Market Growth Trends and Opportunities
With Y2K issues behind us, exact for commerce intelligence solutions, data enabling and data warehousing technologies will continue to drive the market to what they assess will subsist approximately $150 billion in services, software, systems and in-house spending by the year 2003. According to the DBS III survey, organizational expenditures for data warehousing initiatives are expected to expand by 290 percent over the next three years. And approximately 25 percent of BI/DW expenditures will subsist in-house followed by:
Overall, a significant occasion exists for VARs, systems integrators and BI solutions vendors in assisting small- to medium-sized organizations whom tolerate indicated that they are implementing BI/DW solutions on Microsoft SQL server.
Web-Enabling the Warehouse
Organizations are Web-enabling the data warehouse, and 87 percent of the respondents indicated that their DW was designed for Internet/intranet access. Nearly utter members of the organization will become consumers of commerce intelligence information over the next three years as organizations provide access to increasing numbers of:
Virtual Data Warehousing Data and Mining
New technologies will emerge, eliminating the necessity to supervene the traditional path of implementing data warehouses. Line of commerce management will dwelling demands on IT for virtual data warehousing and immediate access to operational data with OLAP integration.
A significant number of respondents in their survey indicated a want to data mine or directly anatomize operational data, and would enjoy OLAP integrated with the operational database.
Demand for solutions, and not technology, will continue to drive vendors to enhance the features and functionality of their offerings. Analytical applications will require customization for specific upright market segments, thereby driving up the barrier of entry into market segments for vendors.
In their survey, more than 50 percent of the respondents indicated they would purchase a packaged BI solution. And the primary motivators for buying packaged BI solutions are faster deployment and lower cost.
Pre-packaged applications that meet these requirements will require significant vendor investment for each upright market segment. Overall consolidation of the software sector will continue as vendors attempt to provide customers with end-to-end commerce intelligence solutions. IBM, Microsoft and Oracle are the paramount DBMS players in great enterprises, and moreover play a significant role in small- to medium-sized businesses, along with Microsoft SQL server.
Microsoft SQL server is beginning to play a significant role in small- to medium-size commerce and moreover at the department flat of great enterprises. DBMS depict the largest segment of software expenditures, (35 percent) followed by analytical tools, analytical applications and ETL tools. Organizations will develop ERP data warehouses with in-house resources or behold to ERP application vendors for solutions.
Systems and Hardware
The systems and hardware market is moreover set for significant growth, with UNIX and Windows 2000 leading the pack. In fact, as of this writing, the hottest data warehousing platform in the market is the Sun Starfire. UNIX will moreover become an notable platform for hosting front-end commerce intelligence tools for great enterprise deployments. Many customers are currently hitting the wall with NT systems that can't provide enterprise-strength scalability, and are waiting for UNIX.
For these users, the enterprise is poignant away from the mainframe as a platform for original commerce intelligence applications and data warehouses. UNIX is now an notable platform for great enterprise data warehouse servers and is dominated by four vendors: IBM, Compaq, Sun and HP. The storage subsystem component of the data warehousing market is expected to grow significantly in the next five years.
The services category is driven primarily by the lack of skilled in-house talent, which they await will persist well beyond the year 2000, therefore the accompanying forecast may subsist too conservative. The largest service categories are system integration and implementation services, which embrace design, architecture and software development.
The denomination of the game isn't backup and recovery; it's data protection.
By Heidi Biggar
Perhaps no unique event has influenced the direction of the data-protection/disaster-recovery industry more than the attacks on the World Trade heart and the Pentagon final September.
"It has made people reconsider their data backup-and-recovery procedures," says Joe Flach, vice president of Eagle Rock Alliance, a management consulting solid specializing in catastrophe recovery and commerce continuance planning in West Orange, NJ. "And it has probably accelerated the trend toward disk-based, versus tape-based, backup-a shift that predates the September 11 attacks."
The appeal of a disk-based data-protection scheme is simple: faster backup and faster restore. "The detain in commerce operations due to tape-based recovery has become unacceptable," writes Phil Goodwin in the META Group report, "Backup is dead- Long live the recovery." Goodwin is program director of server infrastructure strategies at the Stamford, CT-based IT consulting firm.
The reply isn't necessarily an all-tape or all-disk solution, but a combination, says Flach. The key is being able to identify risks and then being able to categorize data according to its overall weight within an organization to determine what can subsist backed up to disk and what requires disk's faster restore times. (See "Disk and tape forge original partnership in backup arena," InfoStor, November 2001, p.1.)
The META Group categorizes risks as either "generalized" (e.g., user error, system failure, and fire) or "regionalized" (e.g., earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes). An effective disaster- recovery scheme assesses these risks and then weighs the weight of the data or the application involved, explains Goodwin. "For example, a 30-mile separation may subsist sufficient to protect data centers from loss due to tornado, but it may subsist an insufficient distance in hurricane-prone locales." (For more information, notice the META report, "Storage portfolio: Are you ready for a recovery disaster?", by Phil Goodwin.)
Likewise, some types of applications/data are more critical than others and therefore warrant more-sophisticated-and more-costly-data-protection/data-recovery schemes. Data in relational databases, for example, is generally deemed more critical than data on end-user PCs or laptops.
Mission-critical data warrants a different set of recovery techniques from non-critical or end-user data types, explains Goodwin. Techniques enjoy point-in-time copy, snapshot, mirroring, and asynchronous/synchronous replication can subsist used to protect mission-critical and/or organizational-critical data, while on-site tape backup and off-site tape vaulting are common recovery methods for less-critical data (see table).Matching recovery methods with application/data categories Snapshot Mirror On-site tape Duplicate tape Off-site tape vault Asynchronous remote replication Synchronous remote replication Mission-critical * * * * * * Organizationally critical * * * * * Non-critical * * * End user * * Source: META Group
Goodwin says that storage resource management (SRM) products enjoy BMC Patrol SRM and Computer Associates' BrightStor SRM can alleviate users determine the relative weight of data within their data centers by identifying data dependencies within application environments.
Additionally, behold for other technologies enjoy clustering, journaling, virtualization, and peer-to-peer remote copy to play an increasing role in IT data-protection schemes, and for quit users to hand over backup/recovery control of their data to IT administrators. According to META, by 2004, IT administrators, not quit users, will subsist liable for not only protecting data stored on PCs and laptops, but moreover for providing a recovery mechanism for that data. The cost of downtime
The hourly cost of downtime, depending on the application, can rush between $80,000 and $2 million, says META's Goodwin. An online survey by Contingency Research Planning, a division of Eagle Rock Alliance, and Contingency Planning & Management magazine, revealed similar findings early final year.
Of the 163 respondents polled in the survey, 46% said their hourly downtime costs ranged from $50,000 to $1 million, while 100% of the respondents said their company's survival was at risk within the first 72 hours of a disaster.
According to Contingency Research Planning, the leading understanding of computer downtime of 12 hours or more is power outages/surges, followed by storm damage (20%), flood and burst pipes (16%), fire and bombing (9%), and earthquakes (7%).
So, when you respect that many of the financial companies in or around the Trade heart had up to seven days to recoup data and to restore critical commerce applications, you realize that the loss-at least from a commerce perspective-could tolerate been far worse, says Flach.
"The sheer magnitude of the September 11 disasters made it easier for great organizations, including some Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies, to respond," says Flach. "A more localized attack-one that had not affected so many companies and had not forced the closure of trading markets-would likely tolerate had much more grave commerce consequences."
Flach says the extra time enabled IT organizations to "mask" the inefficiencies of their disaster-recovery plans. "Hopefully, we've utter erudite something from this lesson," he says.
According to Eagle Rock, the typical time-to-recovery objective among IT organizations is 24 hours. META expects four hours to subsist the "best practice" for the recovery of mission-critical applications/data by 2005.Recovery trends
One of the most common mistakes made by IT administrators when implementing disaster-recovery schemes is putting too much accent on backup and not enough on recovery. But that's changing, as evidenced by the increasing number of recovery-specific announcements from leading backup and software providers (see "Vendors focus on recovery," right).
"Many customers overlook recovery entirely," says META's Goodwin. Why? IT organizations minister to focus on the cost of implementing a disk-based recovery infrastructure versus that of implementing tape backup, he says. "They really necessity to compare the cost of downtime versus the cost of the disk infrastructure. It's one thing to focus on backup, but you're losing money when you're down."
Goodwin says that the expense of implementing a disk-recovery infrastructure pales next to the potential downtime costs-which can sweep from $80,000 to $2 million per hour-of not having such a system in place. This differential, he explains, justifies the transition to disk-based recovery. Goodwin says that tape will continue to play a key role in data archival and in off-site data-recovery sites.
But perhaps the greatest impact of the transition to disk-based recovery will subsist on backup and software vendors, not tape manufacturers. According to META, the trend toward disk-based recovery will give birth to data-protection suites, which will ultimately-in the 2004/2005 time frame-make current backup-and-recovery products obsolete.
Early components embrace various snapshot, mirroring, and remote-mirroring technologies from vendors such as Compaq, EMC, IBM, Network Appliance, and Veritas. original file systems, enhanced SAN management capabilities (including dynamic policy-driven tools), and improved storage virtualization capabilities will subsist added down the road.Users still reckon on tape
By Heidi Biggar
Despite the emerging trend toward disk-based, versus tape-based, backup, many IT organizations remain committed to tape.
For example, Baseline financial Services, a division of Thomson financial and a provider of products and services to about 10,000 institutional portfolio managers in 800 organizations throughout North America, still backs up 200GB to 300GB data to a unique Quantum/ATL P1000 tape library each night despite having lost about two days' worth of data in the attacks on the World Trade heart in September.
Baseline's headquarters, as well as 175 employees, occupied the 77th and 78th floor of Tower 2. The company moreover has offices in Philadelphia and San Francisco.
Addison Tso, the company's systems engineer, says that while the events of September 11 tolerate made catastrophe recovery a higher priority at Baseline-and freed up more dollars to finish it-he doesn't tolerate any plans to bring disk into the mix. In stead, he plans to stick with tape. Recognizing the weight of having some flat of redundancy, Tso says he plans to purchase a second Quantum/ATL P4000 for one of the company's other locations.
Before the attacks, Baseline maintained a unique Quantum/ATL P1000 library equipped with three DLT7000 drives at its data-center operations in Manhattan. Since then, the company has upgraded to a P4000 and Super DLTtape technology.
Similarly, John Wadsworth, director of computer operations at Mohegan Sun, a gaming and entertainment facility in Uncasville, CT, backs up about 8TB of casino and operational data daily to two, seven-drive IBM LTO 3584 Ultrascalable tape libraries-one at each of Mohegan Sun's two campuses. The two facilities are about half a mile apart. Half of the company's NT servers are at one location, half at the other.
For redundancy, Wadsworth says several of the company's business-critical systems tolerate a sister system at the other location. This setup allows for fail-over in the event of a failure or disaster.
To quicken up the backup process, Wadsworth used to back up some of the clients to disk first and then to tape, but he says that the LTO tape configuration has made this unnecessary.Choosing the privilege backup/recovery approach
Making sense of your tape, disk-to-disk, point-in-time, and snapshot options.By Dianne McAdam
Tape is an economical, well-understood, and pervasive backup medium, but users needing more quicken may choose to back up directly to disk or to design employ of point-in-time copy or snapshot tools.
Unfortunately, this costs. While disk vendors are cheerful to supply the extra capacity, a vanilla disk-to-disk solution will double users' disk costs. But falling prices are making disk-based options more popular.
So, as you rethink your data-protection budgets, deem about disk-to-disk, and especially the point-in-time approach. It can reduce backup-and-restore times to virtually zero.Disk-based backup
Disk-to-disk copies reduce the time data is accessed both online and in backup mode to less than disk-to-tape operations (see table). The result on production is insignificant; response time is affected for minutes rather than hours.
That's the current status of the art-a limited downtime in exchange for a lot of data. That might design a casual observer believe the backup problem is finally resolved, right? Well, not quite.
Point-in-timePoint-in-time solutions are now being marketed by vendors such as Compaq, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM, and XIOtech. These products can reduce backup time to almost zero-because there is no "backup." After the initial replete copy, point-in-time technologies only copy changed data, minimizing the time it takes to design that copy.
By having a database on disk that is an updated copy made at close intervals, and by poignant users between the two disk copies, restore time is virtually eliminated.
Point-in-time is a simple solution, but one that requires a lot of extra disk capacity. How many point-in-time copies finish you need? The true question is: How lucky finish you feel? Databases net corrupted, so gauge practices require that several point-in-time copies subsist maintained throughout the day, enabling operations to retrieve an uncorrupted version of the database very close to the point at which the problem occurs.Snapshot
Snapshot technologies from vendors such as Compaq, IBM, Network Appliance, and StorageTek provide ratiocinative point-in-time copies of volumes or files with initially no additional capacity requirements. Though many employ the terms "point-in-time" and "snapshot" interchangeably, "snapshot" defines a unique approach to providing point-in-time copies. How long does it grasp to back up 1TB of data? Technology Relative cost Time to back up Time to restore Notes Disk-to-tape 2 to 3 tape cartridges 1 hr 2 to 3 hrs Traditional, expensive, slow. Disk-to-disk Additional 1TB disk capacity 20 min 20 min Since no reformatting is required, restores grasp the selfsame amount of time as backups. Point-in-time Additional 3+TB disk capacity 20 min; incrementals only grasp a few min. Seconds. No restore required. Restart applications by switching to point-in-time copy. Snapshot Initially, no additional capacity required. Seconds Seconds. No restore required. Restart applications by switching to snapshot, provided utter data blocks are valid. Source: Illuminata
Both provide a second copy of the data. Point-in-time actually creates a separate physical copy of the disk, while snapshot gives the appearance of creating another copy. Snapshot-capable controllers configure a original volume but point to the selfsame location as the original-no data is moved, no additional capacity required, and the copy is "created" within seconds. Additional capacity is required when the volume is updated. Before updates are allowed, snapshot saves the veteran data blocks retaining its original content.
Restarting from snapshot copies can net you past a number of different problems, such as human errors and software failures, and back to a consistent state. Unfortunately, snapshot alone cannot protect against physical storage failures. Since multiple ratiocinative snapshots can point at the selfsame physical data blocks, if one of the blocks goes bad, multiple snapshots are thereby invalidated. ratiocinative snapshots therefore must subsist paired with another technology such as mirroring to reduce the likelihood of physical data loss. Conclusion
Tape backups will continue to tolerate their dwelling within the data center-for a second line of defense behind disk-based backups, as well as for the backup of non- mission-critical information, the retention of historical information, and the archiving of data. IT departments necessity to carefully review their backup strategy and determine the best system for each application.

By Heidi Biggar
Vendors such BakBone Software, StorageTek, and Veritas utter recently made announcements that testify an industry-wide focus on recovery. For example, Veritas, in the first of a succession of anticipated acquisitions in this space, purchased the Kernel Group, an Austin, TX-based provider of automated system-recovery software.
This character of software, generically known as bare-metal restore, automates the restore process of critical system information (e.g., user information and file-system structures) and eliminates the time-consuming and often error-ridden process of manually reconfiguring arduous drives and installing operating systems.
Veritas will initially offer Kernel's Bare Metal Restore software as a separate product offering but plans to integrate it into its software management family. Veritas claims that this software will let users finish full- system restores in as few as 15 minutes. The software supports Windows, Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX platforms and is disk/tape agnostic.
Meanwhile, later this quarter, BakBone says it will expand its VaultDR bare-metal restore module with back for Unix platforms. The capability will subsist available as an option to NetVault 6.7 and is priced at $495 per client. BakBone currently offers this capability for Intel-based operating systems.
And StorageTek recently threw its hat into the business-continuance/disaster-recovery market with the unveiling of its Lifeline brand of hardware products (tape and disk) and services.
HP has announced five original services for optimizing and managing heterogeneous storage environments, along with enhancements to the company's Pay per employ solution for HP StorageWorks XP disk arrays, which allows customers to pay based on actual storage capacity usage.
The original network storage services embrace HP Data Replication Solution, HP catastrophe Tolerant Management, HP Storage Optimization Assessment, HP Data Sanitization, and HP Storage area Management Solution.
"HP sees storage-related services as a key growth area in their overall services effort," says Doug Chandler, program director for Storage and Data Management Services at IDC. "Compaq had a pretty solid memoir to command in this space before the merger, so that's something that HP picked up as Part of the merger. Customers are looking to net the most out of the storage capacity they've already installed, so that's the focus of most of these services. And the data management and retention issue has become a torrid one, due to the headlines about e-mail coming into play in several high-profile court cases, as well as regulations that specify how data, including e-mail, must subsist retained."
"These offerings alleviate to round out HP's storage services portfolio," Chandler continues. "Nothing groundbreaking here, but these services address some key customer concerns pertaining to storage," such as commerce recovery and continuity, storage optimization, data management for e-mail archiving, and sanitization. The e-mail archiving service, relating to Legato software, was announced earlier in the month.https://o1.qnsr.com/log/p.gif?;n=203;c=204660765;s=10655;x=7936;f=201812281308090;u=j;z=TIMESTAMP;a=20400368;e=i
"Increasing agility and revert on IT investment will continue to subsist critical commerce imperatives poignant forward," states Gary Wright, vice president, network storage services, HP Services. "HP, with its Adaptive Enterprise Strategy, is strongly positioned to alleviate companies create more commerce value with services such as these."
Storage has become "the heart of IT," adds Wright, "because it is very critical to IT infrastructure and the total business."
Issues enjoy revert on investment, managing multi-vendor environments, and catastrophe recovery are driving the necessity for better storage management tools, according to Wright. And with more than 2,000 SANs implemented -- "more than anyone else" -- Wright says HP is positioned to deliver those services.
Wright claims companies using the original HP services report they tolerate improved performance, for example, by 30%; reduced the necessity for storage administrators by more than 75%; and increased SLA delivery by 100%.
Page 2: The original HP Services
