This guest post changed into written by passage of Jay Simons. Simons is vice chairman earnings & advertising for Atlassian, the builders of JIRA, and challenge tracker for IT project administration, and Confluence, an advanced commercial enterprise wiki. in the past he became a advertising executive for BEA techniques and Plumtree software.
A year ago Atlassian determined to obtain a considerable know-how funding in OpenSocial . a lot of you might moreover stand in irony OpenSocial as a just a dinky vague expertise Google open sourced, in fragment as an exertion to “out open” facebook and triumph over the buyer social web. two hundred and fifty million fb clients later, OpenSocial hasn’t in reality accomplished that, however has matured in sudden ways – above whole round industry computing. The past 12 months has considered dozens of commercial enterprise utility businesses interlard back for OpenSocial. (several of them even did a very “enterprisey” component and wrote a white paper about it .) At Atlassian, they feel OpenSocial is an industry technology to monitor – which is why they made that guess a year ago. As OpenSocial continues to profit steam, listed here are 5 factors they esteem it’s Important for commercial enterprise application organizations and their customers.1. Componentize functions through GadgetsAs tons as every software wants complete wield over eyeballs, the cyber web has taught us whole a extremely useful lesson about componentization. users frequently requisite to Take advantageous pieces of one utility and set aside them into a special one. In their case, their users desired to easily blend five of their products birthright into a lone tang that differed by passage of role. Some wanted that journey of their mail client, some desired it in JIRA – the tackle of ours they used most – some wanted it in yet a sever device they provided. devices gave us both an smooth passage to deconstruct their applications into moveable accessories and a typical container to reassemble them into views. and since Gmail and iGoogle are already OpenSocial containers they received two further containers their valued clientele could set aside their stuff into free. As OpenSocial turns into greater customary within the commercial enterprise, their clients will maintain extra alternatives to combine issues together.
2. less complicated for developersOpenSocial is according to the tolerable applied sciences that obtain the net travail – HTTP, HTML and XML, RESTful APIs – which potential the barrier-to-entry for many builders is lots lessen. In their illustration, this intended that they might deliver their personal developers up to accelerate sooner and turbo-charge group builders by leveraging the net-applied sciences they already live watchful of. OpenSocial contraptions are smartly documented, and there are lots of substances on the net to advocate builders net whole started.
3. expand your developer ecosystemOne ticket of a fine enterprise is the measurement of its developer ecosystem. Apple, Salesforce.com and even Twitter are brilliant examples. The more straightforward you're making it for developers to obtain contributions to your items, the more advantageous opportunity you maintain got at recruiting more of them. devices are useless primary to develop. when you nonetheless should study the underlying APIs of the tackle you’re making an attempt to draw information from, contraptions simplify the formulation of displaying, publishing, syndicating and securing what you’ve built. This allows for developers to center of attention their energies on a smaller set of challenges. Plus, adding advocate for OpenSocial gadgets offers you entry to lots of, if not heaps, of developers who already understand a passage to build an extension class your product supports. And your purchasers likely maintain developers on staff that maintain either written contraptions, or already understand a passage to. Huddle guess on OpenSocial for this reason, and additionally as a passage to net functionality introduced to their items that they didn’t maintain time to deliver themselves.
four. social statistics interoperabilitySharing social and profile statistics between systems additionally holds a lot of promise. Most industry apps can moreover not study “social” however very nearly every utility creates a community of relationships between individuals and stuff that may live valuable. Take one nearby and dear to us – the “computer virus” or utility defect. There’s an implicit social relationship based between the customer who pronounced the bug, the developer assigned to fix it, the property assurance adult checking it, and everybody else concerned in troubleshooting, developing or ready on a fix. those relationships – and others enjoy it from CRM, ERP, HR or collaboration systems – are useful, and different techniques might benefit from them. I might, for instance, want to participate the people linkages established in an argument tracker with the device used for on-line documentation, enjoy SharePoint, Jive’s SBS, or even their own collaboration device, Confluence. Then the equal americans introduced collectively to troubleshoot a controversy in one gadget could collaborate collectively in an additional on the abilities base article that files the repair. And what about sharing exercise between those methods? It might obtain feel for a revenue Engineer to peer that his lead in Salesforce has just submitted a computer virus record or left a comment on the wiki. That’s an extra enviornment of center of attention for OpenSocial and the ActivityStrea.ms specification that presents some entertaining probabilities.5. enhance the dimension of your R&D teamLots of sensible individuals, from sane companies, are using OpenSocial forward – from Google to Cisco , with whole sizes and shapes of organizations in between. deciding on OpenSocial gave us entry to this pool of innovators, and meant they could invest their innovation power somewhere else. They quiet focal point without delay on making OpenSocial more suitable for us, and they reflect those investments will assist different companies working with the expertise, just as they hope to benefit from the travail others are doing. now not every thing could live advantageous, however frequently they trust the rising tide will elevate whole ships.
We’ve had a fine journey up to now with the know-how, and with the transforming into community of collaborators – from LinkedIn to IBM. in case you’d want to live taught more about what we’re doing, Take a study at http://www.atlassian.com/opensocial, and in case you wish to net involved with the OpenSocial group, talk over with the OpenSocial “get worried” page .

It’s been fascinating to watch how a big incumbent, Facebook, has been effectively dealing with the threat of a rapidly growing upstart, Snap. Facebook, with whole of their product prowess and constellation of social apps, has been steadily chipping away at Snap’s previously meteoric growth rates. This is a case study in how a big company leaning into their strengths and executing flawlessly can neutralize oncoming threats. The situation has moreover reminded me of my time at Google, when Facebook was just an upstart threat and how their team could maintain better leveraged its strengths to compete. Below is a reflection on Google’s approach with OpenSocial, and some of the lessons learned.
Facebook vs OpenSocial
Back in 2007–08, the Facebook juggernaut was surging forward quickly, and the rich identity information that they were collecting would clearly pose a threat to Google’s ad industry over time. One of the dinky known secrets at that time was that photos & games were what drove the vast majority of pageviews and time spent on Facebook. In an exertion to neutralize this growing Facebook threat, Google built a coalition of other social networks and tried to coterie the wagons against Facebook Platform. This coalition, under the designation of OpenSocial, would live Google’s first of many attempts in the social space against FB.
The concept was simple: create a technical criterion that any social network could implement and support. At the time, Google had assembled quite a group of social network “containers”, which would integrate this criterion and allow 3rd party developers (such as RockYou, Slide, etc.) to deploy apps on the network via APIs. There was even a reference implementation of the criterion named “Shindig”, developed as an Apache project and available in Java and PHP.
There were a number of social networks that had agreed to integrate at that time: MySpace, Yahoo, Hi5, Bebo, Orkut, Friendster, LinkedIn, and many others. The value proposition to them: don’t lose out to Facebook. The value exchange for developers to build on OpenSocial: you could write your app once, and then rush your app anywhere (thanks, Java). This, in theory, would net far more user distribution than what was available on Facebook.
Fragmentation of a standard
The realities of implementing an API accomplish not always live up to the dreams expressed in a standard. While OpenSocial made the Apache Shindig reference implementation available, it came in two flavors: Java and PHP, which rarely kept feature parity. So if a container was built on PHP, they may not live able to advocate the identical features as one built on the Java version. Further complicating matters, MySpace, who was the largest container at the time, wrote their own custom version in C#, causing more divergence from the reference implementation.
The requisite for a marquee container
Because there were fragmentation issues with the standard, OpenSocial itself turned out to live a “learn once, write anywhere” operation rather than fulfilling the “write once, rush anywhere” promise. But the value proposition for developers was to write once and suddenly attain users across MySpace, Yahoo, Hi5, and other containers. If a developer had to manually write and rewrite for each social network — the overhead was too great. Why not just concentrate instead on deploying for Facebook, and reaching ~100M users at once?
MySpace was just starting its decline, and Yahoo never really delivered on a major property implementation. Google’s primary offering was Orkut, which was mighty in Brazil and India but not very compelling elsewhere. Had Google been able to step up and present a major marquee container in the configuration of say, YouTube — that might maintain been able to buoy the developer base. Without such a marquee partner, it simply wasn’t worth the exertion for a developer when comparing against Facebook. Google wanted to Take market participate away from Facebook, but didn’t confide strongly enough to building these features into their own core products and leverage their existing networks to grow quickly.
The want of social DNA
OpenSocial marked the dawn of a long line of social product endeavors for Google: Friend Connect, Buzz, Latitude, Google+, and others. Ironically, the information problems at the periphery of social around search & content organization led to one of Google’s most awesome products: Google Photos. That’s where Google shined — problems that could live overcome with raw engineering horsepower. But to understand social took a different character of product lens.
In the early days, when Google was just search — the UI was a clean, simple background. And it remains largely so today. There was dinky scope to reflect about the “experience” beyond this — the vast majority of focus was spent on the backend: delivering the highest property search results, optimizing performance with minimal latency, and so on. whole incredibly Important engineering feats, yet indirectly impacting the product’s information architecture and thus the user’s experience. Consequently, product teams were for the most fragment far more technical and less design oriented, because most of the ponderous lifting was behind the UI. This set a tone early on. But social is not an engineering matter at its core.
OpenSocial was never able to unhurried down the Facebook juggernaut, despite whole of the team’s efforts. And over time, the OpenSocial project surprisingly morphed into an enterprise-oriented criterion being largely driven by IBM and others. But it was a honorable reminder that, if you want to build a product that is highly capable of competing in a certain space, you must first maintain the DNA and talent in house that understands that space, then you must execute (get the birthright partners, manage inconsistencies, etc.) flawlessly. Particularly if you’re battling a formidable foe enjoy Facebook.
A host of Silicon Valley companies led by Google are ganging together to Take on Facebook — the social networking company that is the toast of the town birthright now.
A group of Facebook’s cross-town rival, including Google, LinkedIn, Hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning, are apparently responding, in an exertion to behold if they can stop Facebook from running away with the lead in social networking.
The OpenSocial project is introducing common standards to allow software developers to write programs for their various developer platforms. It centers around Google’s recent project, called OpenSocial (URL to travel live on Thursday, behold press release below). The recent York Times reported the intelligence first. The project offers common APIs application developers can exhaust to create applications “host” company sites that participate.
It’s the latest manifestation of a draw that can live traced back publicly to recent Google hire and well-known software developer Brad Fitzpatrick’s minute post in August. Then, he described how he hoped to develop ways of connecting users based on their social relationships between many web sites.
A set of common standards between social networks has long been proposed by some of Silicon Valley’s digerati, foremost among them Marc Canter, although the proposals maintain focused on letting users port their profile information from site to site. The OpenSocial exertion appears to let the various sites maintain control over profiles, however, letting developers build applications that would fitting into an area within the host site’s user profile page, but not necessarily port the profile itself — just enjoy at Facebook.
Silicon Valley notables such as Joseph Smarr of Plaxo, Robert Scoble of Podtech and Michael Arrington of Techcrunch followed up together with Canter on Fitzpatrick’s post with a user’s “social web Bill of Rights”. The blog post described how users had the birthright to own and control their own data, including data about relationships with friends.
“The Internet is hypothetical to survive many threats,” Plaxo’s John McCrea tells us about OpenSocial. “What we’re watching is an immune reaction to the ascend of walled gardens which threaten to Balkanize the web.
VentureBeat confirmed the intelligence of OpenSocial this evening with Google. The company said other participants include Oracle, Viadeo, ING, Hyves, Tianji and Salesforce.com. Facebook is not a member, but was welcome to link the group, according to Joe Kraus, a Google product manager. Facebook’s spokeswoman Brandee Barker, when asked to respond, said “no comment.”
By sharing standards to develop applications, the sites will inevitably draw developer interest. Most developers we’ve talked with are stretched for time and resources, and they’ve flocked to Facebook because it was the one location that let them develop applications with transparent rules and moreover the liberty to obtain money. By creating a second social network hub, Google and its allies could live a compelling home for developers. Had Google not done this, developers may maintain chosen to travail with MySpace (expected to launch in a month or so), or not even bothered leaving Facebook.
One thing not yet addressed by OpenSocial is the money and advertising component. It’s fine to maintain common standards, but will those standards include the birthright to obtain money from applications, and to rush advertising on the application pages, without interference from the hosting Web site? It appears to leave this for each host site to determine. They requested comment from Google on its own plans, but haven’t heard back on that [Update: A Google spokesperson said “we haven’t ironed out any details yet,” but was confident that OpenSocial’s model “will create revenue opportunities for everyone.”]
MySpace, Meebo and Bebo, whole significant players with platforms, or planning platforms, are moreover were not listed as members of the group. Slide, a photo-sharing site not mentioned in Google’s materials, is believed to live participating, however. Flixster and RockYou were mentioned as participants, but are developers, not “hosts.”
Another mighty designation that is absent from the list is Yahoo. While the actual significance of the grouping is not yet known, for Yahoo to miss the boat on this wouldn’t live good. It has struggled enough over the past year.
See the press release below for available details, but the available APIs are 1) access to a user’s profile, 2) their friends, and 3) the capacity to let their friends know that activities maintain taken place
Below is a draft press release from Google on the program:
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — November 1, 2007 – Google, Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the release of OpenSocial — a set of common APIs for building social applications across the web — for developers of social applications and websites that want to add social features. OpenSocial will unleash more powerful and pervasive social capabilities for the web, empowering developers to build far-reaching applications that users can luxuriate in regardless of the websites, web applications, or social networks they use. The release of OpenSocial marks the first time that multiple social networks maintain been made accessible under a common API to obtain evolution and distribution easier and more efficient for developers.
The proliferation of unique APIs across dozens of social websites is forcing developers to elect which ones to write applications for – and then spend their time writing separately for each. OpenSocial gives developers of social applications a lone set of APIs to learn for their application to rush on any OpenSocial-enabled website. By providing these simple, standards-based technologies, OpenSocial will accelerate innovation and bring more social features to more places across the web. Users win too: they net more interesting, engaging, or useful features faster.
“The web is fundamentally better when it’s social, and we’re only just starting to behold what’s practicable when you bring social information into different contexts on the web,” said XXXX. “There’s a lot of innovation that will live spurred simply by creating a criterion passage for developers to rush social applications in more places. With the input and iteration of the community, they hope OpenSocial will become a criterion set of technologies for making the web social.”
Learn Once, attain Across the Web
One of the most Important benefits of OpenSocial is the vast distribution network that developers will maintain for their applications. The sites that maintain already committed to supporting OpenSocial — Website partner A, Website partner B, Website partner C, etc. –- picture an audience of well over 100 million users globally. critical for time- and resource-strapped developers is being able to “learn once, write anywhere” — learn the OpenSocial APIs once and then build applications that travail with any OpenSocial-enabled websites.
Several developers, including Gadget partner Z, Gadget partner Y, Gadget partner X, etc., maintain already built applications that exhaust the OpenSocial APIs. Starting today, a developer sandbox is available at http://sandbox.orkut.com so developers can travel in and start testing the OpenSocial APIs. The goal is to maintain developers build applications in the sandbox so they can deploy on Orkut and ultimately other OpenSocial sites.
More social In More Places
The being of this lone programming model moreover helps websites who are involved to answer their users’ interest in social features. More developers building social applications more easily translates directly into more features more quickly for websites.
“Orkut has tens of millions of passionate users who are constantly clamoring for recent ways to maintain fun with their friends and express themselves through Orkut,” said Amar Gandhi, group product manager for Orkut, Google’s social networking service. “By using OpenSocial to open up Orkut as a platform for any developer, they can tap into the vast creativity of the community and obtain recent features available to their users frequently.”
The common method that OpenSocial provides for hosting social applications means that websites can engage a much larger pool of third party developers than they could otherwise. They can direct resources that might maintain gone to maintaining a proprietary API and supporting its developer community to other projects.
Because OpenSocial removes the hassle from developing for individual websites, developers can unleash their creativity anywhere that catches their interest. This will translate into a wave of social features in contexts outside of the personal entertainment and games that are traditionally thought of as the social web.
Three APIs available now
The OpenSocial APIs give developers access to the data needed to build social applications: access to a user’s profile, their friends, and the capacity to let their friends know that activities maintain taken place. OpenSocial resources for developers and websites are available now at code.google.com/apis/opensocial.
Websites will maintain access to:– A tool to back OpenSocial-enable their websites– A advocate forum for communicating with Google and other websites
All of these resources and the live developer sandbox are available now.
Developers already at work
Dozens of developers maintain helped test early iterations of the OpenSocial APIs and Google is grateful for the extensive feedback they maintain provided.

Eric Eldon contributed to this article.
Friendster, the social network that has seen explosive growth in Asia but continues to lag behind Facebook and MySpace elsewhere, has launched advocate for OpenSocial apps on its evolution platform. Friendster initially launched its platform eventual October, but has restricted available applications to those developed especially for Friendster’s API (much as a developer would maintain to develop specifically for Facebook).
Beginning today, Friendster will allow developers to submit OpenSocial compliant apps (up to the .7 release of the API). These applications will whole live screened and then entered into the network’s application directory (again, similar to Facebook’s). Friendster says that there will live no manifest incompatibility to users between an OpenSocial and Friendster application.
Friendster is one of the web’s older social networks, and was once a leading player in the space, turning down an acquisition present from Google for $30 million in 2003. Since then the company has been unable to retain up in American markets, but has done very well in Asia, with a reported 55 million users spanning the continent (they moreover obtain up 70% of the site’s registered users).
Google’s OpenSocial platform allows developers to create a a lone application that will travail across multiple social newtorks that advocate the platform’s API. Along with Friendster, other major sites that maintain pledged advocate to the platform include MySpace, Bebo, and Six Apart.
While Friendster may not live nearly as mighty a player as MySpace or Facebook in the United States, it quiet has a vast audience in Asia. Because of the minimal amount of overlap seen between Asian and American markets (Facebook and MySpace maintain had difficulty expanding in some portions of Asia), the site offers developers a big number of potential recent users. Its addition to the OpenSocial platform puts increasing pressure on Facebook to adopt some kindhearted of open application standard, as developers will dislike having to reprogram their applications just to rush on Facebook’s closed platform.
