    A day-long programme of executive briefings on the growing markets and consequent business opportunities of photonics technologies and applications featured a distinguished panel, including Peter Hartmann (SCHOTT), Wenko Süptitz (SPECTARIS), Elisabeth Leitner (Deutsches Institut für Normung), Detlev Ristau (Laserzentrum Hannover), Augustin Grillet (Barco, Photonics21), Anthony Hillion (Aquiti Gestion), Els Van de Velde (IDEA Consult), Peter Peumans (IMEC), and Reinhart Poprawe (Fraunhofer ILT). Synopses of talks by Peumans and Poprawe follow.

    Moderator Steve Anderson of SPIE presented on data developed by the society on the revenue and number of jobs generated by the core photonics components. The data compose the first report in an ongoing analysis on the size of the global photonics market, with the goal of drawing attention to the vital contributions photonics technologies and applications do to the economy and to people's lives.     Integrated photonics for the life sciences

    Integrated photonics from silicon and silicon-oxy-nitride waveguides are enabling unique and reduced-cost life sciences applications including sensors, next generation diagnostics, DNA sequencing, lens-free microscopy, wearable spectrometers, single-molecule fluorescence detection, and blood cell sorters that can find rare, circulating tumor cells, noted IMEC's Peter Peumans. IMEC has tenacious capability in integrated photonics fabrication and is now applying this expertise to biophotonics devices on a silicon platform.

    One project is designed to expand the performance of high-throughput screening for DNA sequencing that read larger ground pairs or longer "phrases" of DNA, with parallelized unique molecule fluorescence detection that expand accuracy and quicken by monitoring 150,000 reactions simultaneously.

    Cancer tumors become far more deadly when they spread via blood, but finding and distinguishing them is difficult because a medical device must sort through billions of cells to find one circulating tumor cell. Peumans outlined how IMEC work in cell sorting and lens-free microscopy offers the opening for significant improvements in cancer detection.

    Peumans noted that early detection of certain diseases can significantly reduce healthcare costs because treatments later in the disease cycle may cost over five times as much as the options available to the patient at an earlier stage.

    Approximately 75% of medical keeping expenses are devoted to patients with confirmed disease, with ongoing monitoring requirements. To reduce cost and ameliorate quality of life people generally prefer to breathe at home, even with confirmed disease, so unique methods to monitor patients and report key measurements are required.

    Recent IMEC work has developed technology to disburse smart phones and pads that are now ubiquitous, rather than requiring investment in unique remote monitoring instruments. These involve a technical concept IMEC calls "iLab" that is being developed with Johns Hopkins University, which delivers next generation diagnostics using personal electronics.

    IMEC is besides experimenting with a wearable, high-performance spectrometer on a chip -- biophotonics on a silicon platform -- that they envision working as a wristband-style instrument.

    'Bits to photons to atoms': 3D printing

    The age of digital photonic production includes laser additive manufacturing, selective laser melting (SLM), laser metal Deposition (LMD) and controlled deposition of functional layers. These and related methods transform "bits to photons to atoms" in ways that reduce cost, reduce waste, and enable unique tangled forms and structures, said Reinhart Poprawe of Fraunhofer ILT.

    Prototyping a unique engine cache can breathe achieved in four days rather than four months using additive manufacturing processes developed at Fraunhofer ILT, Poprawe said. The jury's tough assignment was to rank the projects, with the outcome being "incredibly close."

    The top prize in the category of "Best Innovation by an Individual Researcher" went to Josep Carreras from LEDMOTIVE Technologies S.L., for "Ledmotive®: A light engine with replete spectral control."

    The first runner-up was Markus Mangold from Empa, Swiss Federal Laboratories Materials Science and Technology for his project "Portable mid-IR vestige gas sensor for mobile applications."

    Second runner-up was Christophe Caucheteur, University of Mons, Electromagnetism and Telecommunication Department, for his project, "IR radiation sensor for early fire detection."

    The winners in the category of "Best Innovation by a Multilateral Project, Organisation or Company" were Gary Stevens, MINERVA, Vivid Components, FP7 project, UK, for their project "Mid- to near-IR spectroscopy for improved medical diagnostics."

    The first runner-up prize went to Udo Weigel, ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences / HemoPhotonics S.L., for their project, "A portable diffuse optical Neuro-Monitor."

    Second runner-up was Stephan Stockel with the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Friedrich Schiller University / Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology under the umbrella of the European Network of Excellence Photonics4Life, for their project, "The Bio Particle Explorer."

    From classical to quantum nonlinear optics in photonic structures

    John SipeThe first speaker in Tuesday's irritated Topics session was John Sipe of the University of Toronto whose talk entitled "From classical to quantum nonlinear optics in photonic structures" illustrated the connections between classical nonlinear optics and its quantum counterpart.

    Sipe introduced his topic showing that classical phenomena such as inequity frequency generation (DFG) and four-wave mixing find their quantum analogs in instinctive parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and instinctive four-wave mixing wherein one can envision the seed in classical optics being replaced by quantum fluctuations for the equivalent quantum processes. The question, then, is how to connect classical and quantum effects.

    To motivate this discussion, Sipe reminded his audience of the Einstein A and B coefficients used to report instinctive (A) and stimulated (B) emission rates. In both cases, the system evolves from an excited to a ground status with the emission of a photon but the stimulated case can breathe understood on classical grounds whereas the instinctive case is purely a quantum effect.

    That said, measurements to determine B through classical means results in lore related to its quantum counterpart, A. Sipe demonstrated similar logic can breathe applied to DFG and SPDC and illustrated the similarities in the expressions for the output power of the two phenomena.

    When analyzing this case in terms of wave functions, Sipe demonstrated that classical experiments can provide insight on the biphoton wave function. The experimental arrangement used in this case was termed ‘stimulated emission tomography' or ‘virtual tomography' as it's now known. Overall, the concept that this connection exists and can breathe employed to more quickly and easily measure and understand quantum phenomena is a powerful one which could prove profitable in advancing studies of optical devices for quantum information technologies.

    Graphene quantum nano-optoelectronics: fundamentals and applications

    Frank KoppensThe second speaker in Tuesday's irritated Topics session was straightforward Koppens from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), who presented on graphene in his talk, "Nano-optoelectronic 2D materials."

    Graphene, a unique layer of graphite laid out on a honeycomb lattice, demonstrates lofty conductivity, no bandgap, and massless charge carriers due its linear dispersion relationship at low energies. In terms of optoelectronic properties, it offers broadband absorption, speedily response, and tunable plasmonic properties along with other unique characteristics including big surface-to-volume ratio.

    Tuesday's schedule included more irritated Topics speakers (above) but the conference rooms were besides assiduous with talks on the latest technologies -- a sample follows.

    Extending light-sheet microscopy for whole-brain imaging

    Presenting in the Neurophotonics session of the Biophotonics: Photonic Solutions for Better Health keeping conference, Francesco Pavone of the Università degli Studi de Firenze discussed work his group has done to extend light-sheet microscopy methods.

    This technique, known for its data acquisition quicken but traditionally limited in resolution, was adapted to a confocal scheme. The resulting confocal light sheet microscopy (CLSM) system improves image contrast and reduces image blurring.

    Coupled with image stitching software and cell counting software developed by the team, CLSM offers the ability to accomplish total brain imaging and track processes. Combining CLSM with two photon fluorescence imaging and correlating the resulting images enables a study of long term projection neurons ex vivo.

    This work provides the potential for correlating unique neuron functionality with morphology, studying plastic brain rewiring after surgery or sensory deprivation, and analyzing the sprouting response of different neuron types thereby deepening their understanding of neuron activity in the brain.

    Image-guided brain tumor surgery

    Pablo Valdes from Dartmouth College described work done in conjunction with Britton chance Award winner Brian Wilson from the University of Toronto in his presentation, "A translational paradigm for quantitative multiplexed fluorescence image guidance for brain tumor surgery." The goal of the joint research program is to ameliorate upon the disburse of fluorescence techniques in tumor detection.

    Valdes noted that today such techniques are largely qualitative relying either on microscope observation or camera image viewing to pilot surgeons during procedures. This qualitative nature limits accuracies to 60-70% in identifying and removing tumors. Developing an approach to measure tissue optical properties allowing for a correction factor to breathe applied to the raw fluorescence signal thereby enabling extraction of the intrinsic fluorescence moves the system from the qualitative to the quantitative realm.

    Initial clinical results using a probe designed by the team to measure tissue properties resulted in 80-90% accuracy, a significant improvement over the accuracies obtained with purely qualitative means. Acting on feedback from clinicians who were more restful with traditional microscopy methods, the team integrated their system into a microscope enabling 3D imaging with a 1-2 second/image capture rate.

    Valdes added that multiple biomarkers can breathe used to enhance information capture and that the technique is extendable into the near IR portion of the spectrum. Future work will search for to incorporate stereoscopic methods and do disburse of endogenous markers. The work represents a significant improvement to a traditional surgical system and the effectiveness of translational research in improving health care.

    Hyperspectral imaging for derive cells, diagnostics

    First up was the presentation of two SPIE society awards.

    SPIE President Philip Stahl presented the 2014 Britton chance Biomedical Optics Award to Brian Wilson (Ontario Cancer Institute) in recognition of his outstanding lifetime contributions to the realm of biomedical optics through the progress of innovative, lofty impact technologies. The award particularly honors pioneering contributions to optical methods and devices that own facilitated advancements in biology or medicine.

Whether in industry, academia, or government, scientists necessity to raise public and international political awareness about the consequence of light for the future of global society.     IYL2015 will raise public and international political awareness of the consequence of light for the future of global society. To exploit Europe's replete potential in photonics collaboration along the value-chain and networking is crucial. The PPP with its working groups is pertinent for your work and open to all. fetch involved," he urged.

    Photonics circuits in the mainstream

    Raymond BeausoleilLarge-scale integration presents numerous opportunities for continued research, understanding, and eventual migration into the mainstream for photonics circuits, as demonstrated by irritated Topics speaker Raymond Beausoleil, an HP Fellow in Systems Research at HP Labs.

    Accessing resonant modes in photonic micro- and nanostructures producing increases in spectral density, energy efficiency, and local-field intensity, bar no one without the disburse of metal, can enable large-scale integrated photonic circuits and could interpolate an optics version of Moore's Law, Beausoleil said.

    In the latter, Wilson showed recent National Cancer Institute (NCI) results demonstrating a lofty degree of mistaken positives implying the potential for non-essential surgical procedures.

    Both cases illustrate the necessity for minimally invasive techniques for diagnosis and treatment, and personalized treatment is another vital factor.     Student Chapter Leadership Workshop kicks off a assiduous week

    Climategate 2: More ado about nothing. Again. | existent questions and Pass4sure dumps

    Geez, this again? Seriously?

    Two years ago, someone hacked into a University of East Anglia server and anonymously posted thousands of emails from climate scientists. Quickly dubbed "Climategate", global warming deniers jumped on this, trying to show that these scientists were engaging in fraudulent activities. However, it was pellucid to anyone intimate with how research is done that this was complete and utter bilge; the scientists were not trying to shroud anything, were not trying to trick anyone, and were not trying to falsely exaggerate the dangers of climate change.

    I wrote about this when it happened and then again quickly thereafter, showing this was just noise. Accusations of fraud were leveled at climate scientist Michael Mann, but time and again he was exonerated: dote this time, and then this time, and then this time, and of course this time, and then my favorite, this time.

    Climategate was widely denounced as a manufactured controversy, except, of course, by denialists. Because they denied it. That’s axiomatic.

    However, dote a bacterium festering away someplace dank and fetid, Climategate is poised to infect reality once again: The Guardian is reporting that a second cache of stolen emails has been released anonymously, and once again the cries of intrigue are being heard. However, it looks dote these emails aren’t really new, and were simply from the original stolen batch, but were held back until today. mind you, the emails from the first Climategate were released right before a mammoth climate conference, in an obvious attempt to derail it in the media. This unique batch was released days before a similar conference, in what appears to breathe a similar propaganda move.

    [UPDATE: Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA) has called on the US intelligence community to investigate who stole these emails. I reason this is the right move. They silent don’t know who did this two years ago, and I’d breathe fascinated to discern who was behind it. H/T Michael Mann on Twitter.]

    Climate change denial blogs picked up on this immediately of course. There are examples in the Guardian article linked above. But this is the accustomed hue and cry, with nothing really new. About bar no one this supposedly unique material Michael Mann said:

    Mann called the unique batch of emails "truly pathetic" and said they reflect desperation among climate deniers, who own failed to pick holes in the science. "They own instead turned to smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails in their distress to try to befuddle the public about the science and thereby forestall any action to combat this captious threat."

    It’s hard for me to wrangle against this, given what Dr. Mann has gone through the past few years. Attacked constantly, exonerated repeatedly, he knows the climate change denialist methods probably better than anyone.

    The University of East Anglia, from which the stolen emails originated, issued a press release:

    This appears to breathe a carefully-timed attempt to reignite controversy over the science behind climate change when that science has been vindicated by three sunder independent inquiries and number of studies – including, most recently, the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature group.

    That eventual bit about Berkeley is from just a few weeks ago, showing once again that global warming is real, and that Dr. Mann’s results show that there has been a sudden, recent, and big expand in global temperatures.

    None of this comes as a surprise to any of us who own been covering this for the past few years. I wonder, though, if the mainstream media own scholarly their lesson? reason Progress wonders the same thing.

    So, with the clamor Machine ready to nip into replete gear, let me breathe very, very clear:

    Global warming is real. Independent studies verify it. Vast amounts of evidence back it. 97% of climate scientists who study it agree with this. It’s almost certainly caused by human activity.

    Got it?

    The evidence is overwhelming, and no amount of clamor will quit that. But that’s why the clamor is made, to distract you. They are long past the time when this was simple skepticism — the open and honest questioning of evidence — and are now well into full-blown denial. This second release of emails is more evidence for that, especially given the timing.

    And in some sectors that won’t do a inequity — cough cough Fox word cough cough — because they are impervious to evidence. So if this doesn’t blow over immediately — as well it probably should — then anticipate to discern a lot more of this:

    When Are 8 Bits More Than 32? | existent questions and Pass4sure dumps

    Whenever they write up a feature on a microcontroller or microcontroller project here on Hackaday, they inevitably fetch two diametrically opposed opinions in the comments. If the article featured an 8-bit microcontroller, an army of ARMies post that they would accomplish it better, faster, stronger, and using less power on a 32-bit platform. They’re usually right. On the other hand, if the article involved a 32-bit processor or a single-board computer, the 8-bitters near out of the woodwork telling you that they could fetch the job done with an overclocked ATtiny85 running cycle-counted assembly. And some of you probably can. (We treasure you all!)

    redblue_pillWhen beginners walk into this briar-patch by asking where to fetch started, it can breathe a puny bewildering. The Arduino recommendation is pretty smooth to make, because there’s a tremendous amount of newbie-friendly material available. And Arduino doesn’t necessarily signify AVR, but when it does, that’s not a disagreeable preference due to the relatively springy current sourcing and sinking of the part. You’re not going to lose your job by recommending Arduino, and it’s pretty hard to fetch the smoke out of one.

    But these days when someone unique to microcontrollers asks what path they should take, I’ve started to retort back with a question: how interested are you in learning about microcontrollers themselves versus learning about making projects that occur to disburse them? It’s dote “blue pill or red pill”: the retort to this question sets a path, and I wouldn’t recommend the same thing to people who answered differently.

    For people who just want to fetch stuff done, a library of easy-to-use firmware and a bunch of examples to crib learn from are paramount. My guess is that people who retort “get stuff done” are the 90%. And for these folks, I wouldn’t vacillate at bar no one to recommend an Arduino variant — because the community back is excellent, and someone has written an add-on library for nearly every gizmo you’d want to attach. This is well-trodden ground, and it’s very often plug-and-play.

    Know Thyself

    But the other 10% are in a tough position. If you really want to understand what’s going on with the chip, how the hardware works or at least what it does, and fetch beyond simply using other people’s libraries, I would pretension that the Arduino environment is a quicken bump. Or as an debilitated friend of mine — an embedded assembly programmer — would say, “writing in Arduino is dote knitting with boxing gloves on.”

    His point being that he knows what the chip can do, and just wants to do it accomplish its thing without any unnecessary layers of abstraction getting in the way. For these folks, an easy-to-use environment and a powerful chip is a stately fit.

    But my counsel to the relative newbie who actually wants to learn the chip is the exact opposite. Pick an environment that maximally exposes the artery the chip works, and pick a chip that’s not so complicated that it completely overwhelms you. It’s the exact contrary case: I’d recommend a “difficult” but powerful environment and a simple chip.

    If you want to become a race-car driver, you don’t start you out on a Formula 1 car because that’s dote learning to pilot a rocket ship. But you accomplish necessity to understand how a car handles and performs, so you wouldn’t start out in an automatic extravagance sedan either. You’d breathe driving comfortably much sooner, but you lose a lot of empathy for the drivetrain and intuition about traction control. Rather, I’d start you out on something perhaps underpowered, but with profitable feel for the road and a manual transmission. And that, my friends, is straight C on an 8-bitter.

    Start Small…

    I hear the cries of the ARM fanboys and fangirls already! “8-bit chips are yesterday, and you’re just wasting your time on debilitated silicon.” “The programming APIs for the 8-bit chips are outdated and awkward.” “They don’t even own DMA or my other favorite peripherals.” bar no one true! And that’s the point. It’s what the 8-bitters don’t own that makes them exemplar learning platforms.

    How many of you out there own actually looked at the code that runs when you ilk HAL_Init() or systinit() or whatever? Even if you have, can you recall everything it does? I’m not adage it’s impossible, but it’s a lot to throw at a beginner just to fetch the chip up and running. tangled chips are complex, and confronting a beginner with tons of startup code can overwhelm. But glossing over the startup code will foil the dig-into-the-IC types.

Configuring the GPIO pin direction on an 8-bitter by flipping bits is going to breathe unique to a person just starting out, but learning the artery the hardware works under the hood is an vital step. (This is tautologically suitable if you weigh the Arduino libraries themselves, many of which are written in C or C-flavored C++.) Learning how to work with other people’s libraries certainly isn’t as smooth as it is in Arduino, where you just draw down a menu. But it’s a transferable skill that’s worth learning, IMO, if you’re the ilk who wants to fetch to really know the chips.

    …But fetch Big

    So start off with the 8-bit chip of your preference — they’re cheap enough that you can buy a stick of 25 for only a tiny bit more than the cost of a unique Arduino. Or if you’d dote to target the 8-bit AVR platform, there’s a ton of cheap bare-bones boards from overseas that will deliver you the soldering, and only double the (minimal) cost. Build 25 projects with the same chip until you know something about its limits. You don’t own to achieve lft levels, or even memorize the ghastly “mnemonic” macro names for every bit in every register, but at least fetch to know how a timer/counter is profitable for. Along the way, you’ll develop a library of code that you use.

    Then lag on. Because it is suitable that the 8-bitters are limited. Along the way, you’ll own picked up some odd habits — I silent instinctively cringe at 32-bit floating point multiplications even on a chip with a 32-bit FPU — so you don’t want to stagnate in the 8-bit world too long.

    Maybe try an RTOS, maybe play around with bar no one the tools you’ve been missing on the smaller chips. But once you’ve gained even a bit of mastery over the tools, you’ll know how to elect for yourself.
