IBM this week updated its Power7 server line with the company's latest Power7+ processors while expanding the line at the entry-level with its first Unix servers priced less than $6,000.
The company also unveiled new PureSystems converged infrastructure solutions with new reference architectures for its PureFlex systems, as well as a new entry-level PureApplication System for Web and database applications, and it increased performance for its PureData expansive data appliances.
The new servers and PureSystems solutions, which IBM is targeting at Linux as well as Unix environments, provide a new level of scalability to customers and solution providers, said Bradley McCredie, vice president for IBM Power systems and an IBM Fellow.

"In addition to having a brand new technology in the Power7+ systems, we're bringing the expense of AIX systems route down to under $6,000," McCredie said. "We believe that, with the scalability of the new technology, they can address new markets in a very, very price-competitive route compared to x86-based systems."
IBM's Power7 server line started getting updated eventual August with the Power7+ processor, which differs from the Power7 processor in that it has a larger per-core L3 cache, improved clock speeds and the talent to ply more logical partitions (LPARs).
The initial rollout of the Power7+ family started with the high-end Power 770 and Power 780 servers, but it had not been extended across the entire line, McCredie said
It includes the entry-level Power 710, a single-socket 2U rack mount server that can be configured with up to eight processor cores and up to 256 GB of remembrance and carries a starting expense of $5,947, he said.
IBM also added the Power7+ processor to its PowerLinux line of servers designed specifically for the Linux operating system, he said.
IBM, via its Power line of servers, provides attractive expense points in scale-out server environments, McCredie said.
"These are high-density Linux environments where customers recognize at the number of virtual machines per dollar they can get," he said. "If you want to derive as many applications in a frame as possible, the best altenative is a Power server, which includes every the security and reliability of the Power7+ processors."
NEXT: Updates To IBM's PureSystems Solutions
IBM also updated its PureSystems solutions, which is a converged infrastructure architecture that combines the company's server, storage, networking and management technologies into a sole integrated platform based on x86 or Power7+ processors.
The new solutions are aimed at helping increase advocate for new customer environments, especially for managed service providers, said Peter McCaffrey, director of IBM PureSystems.
The first PureSystems update is the addition of several new tested reference architectures for the IBM PureFlex line, which provides a cloud-based infrastructure.

The new model can be configured with as few as 32 x86 processor cores and is upgradable to up to 64 cores, McCaffrey said. Previously, the entry point was 96 cores.
Also new is a Power7+-based PureSystems Application System that starts at 96 processor cores, McCaffrey said.
"We've essentially broadened both ends of the PureSystems Application System family," he said.
IBM also updated its PureData System for Analytics expansive data analytics solution based on IBM's Netezza software. The latest version includes a combination of new x86 processors and higher-performance hard drives to provide a data scan rate of 12 GB per second and 50 percent more storage capacity per rack, he said.

IBM has worked with Intel on six generations of extensions to the Xeon processors and their related chipsets, and has invested hundreds of millions of dollars since the 1990s to bring mainframe and Unix features to X86 iron. With the X4 generation several years back, when Intel did not advocate eight-socket systems and its four-socket chipsets were not as efficient as they now are, IBM created its own chipsets for lashing together multiple Xeon processors into a chunky remembrance system. With the X5 machines three years ago, Intel’s chipsets improved in terms of CPU scalability and I/O bandwidth, but IBM extended the remembrance bus to advocate more main remembrance than the Intel chipsets did by themselves.
"The meet for purpose, modular design of the X6 systems enables a bunch of genuine stuff," Yost tells EnterpriseTech.
The first rack-based X6 machine is called the System x3850 X6, and it comes in a 4U chassis that allows for one storage module and up to four processor modules to be slid into the enclosure. The System x3950 X6 is a double-decker setup that essentially glues together two System x3850 X6 machines with a NUMA connector to create an eight-socket system. Each compute node in these machines has a sole processor socket and 24 remembrance slots, for a maximum of 1.5 TB of main remembrance using 64 GB DDR3 main remembrance sticks. Each compute node, which IBM calls a processor book, slides into the enclosure and uses the QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) links on the processor to hook into a backplane that has the Intel chipset (in this case, the C600J chipset) to create a sole system image from the nodes. The shared remembrance coupling of the processors allows for a sole instance of an operating system to span every of the compute, memory, and I/O in the system, bringing every of these resources to stand for applications that require more capacity than is available in a workhorse two-socket Xeon E5-2600 v2 system.

The X6 machines comprise double chipkill remembrance scrubbing, which heals around wrong bits in main remembrance without crashing the system, and what IBM calls advanced core recovery, which isolates a failed core, and automated processor failover, which fails over the I/O from the chipset from one socket to another in the event that the processor in the first dies for some reason. These and a number of other features are implemented in firmware or in the backplane of the system.
Flashy remembrance – Literally
As EnterpriseTech expected, the new X6 machines also occupy what IBM calls eXFlash remembrance channel storage, which puts very lickety-split twinkle remembrance on a DDR3 remembrance stick to derive it closer to the processor and running on the remembrance bus. IBM did not want to expose the source of this eXFlash, but Brian Cox, senior director of marketing at SanDisk, confirmed to EnterpriseTech that SanDisk was the source of the parts.
The remembrance channel storage modules were developed by SanDisk in conjunction with Diablo Technologies, and are called UltraDIMM by SanDisk. The modules Put twinkle remembrance created by SanDisk (which has a twinkle partnership with Toshiba) that has a SATA interface on a remembrance stick. Diablo has created a chipset that converts the SATA protocol to the DDR3 main remembrance protocol, and SanDisk has created a driver for a server BIOS that makes it recognize affection a proper disk storage device to the system and its operating system. SanDisk also has created the wear-leveling algorithms to give the twinkle remembrance a long palter in the system. IBM is keen on the UltraDIMMs for this reason, and because it has the jump on the competition. "It is always difficult for us to advertise precisely what handicap they will occupy over their competitors, but they expect to occupy a multiple quarter advantage," says Yost, referring to the eXFlash-branded UltraDIMM remembrance channel storage.
The X6 systems are not just taking the UltraDIMMs from SanDisk and plugging them in. IBM has a number of add-ons that weave them into the system. The company’s twinkle Cache Accelerator, which learns what data is hot, warm, and chilly in a system and automagically moves it to the appropriate storage tier, knows about the flashy DIMMs. Another feature called WriteNow commits data to the twinkle DIMM faster than the default drivers, dropping latency by another 50 percent or so. (How it works is a trade secret.) Data Direct Accelerator allows for software engineers to revolve interrupts or polling-driven operations on and off in the system to achieve custom tuning for applications that hit the twinkle DIMMs.
IBM fully expects that for many workloads, customers will lumber all-flash in the X6 systems for both performance and price/performance reasons. Companies massively overprovision their storage arrays, as they occupy done for decades, so they can derive acceptable performance, and it is not uncommon for arrays to be held at 50 percent of capacity or lower. And customers are going to be able to deliver 43 percent by poignant from an X5 with spinning drives to an X6 with their eXFlash remembrance channel storage."
The Xeon E7 v2 chip will top out at 15 cores, 50 percent more than the current ten-core Xeon E7 v1, and also has three times the remembrance capacity per socket, so a 46 percent performance increase is expected between the X5 and X6 server generations, and more for memory-bound workloads. This is a like-for-like comparison with spinning disks. IBM is still doing the performance testing on the eXFlash modules.
That X5 to X6 expense comparison above includes fees for both hardware and software for the systems. Further details were not available. Yost did toss out another captivating statistic. A lot of customers, particularly in the Asian markets, are buying four-socket Xeon machines but only putting two processors in them. This gives them a route to boost the performance if a node radically without having to swap out the box. Compared to a machine that puts four sockets on a sole system board, the modular X6 machine has a 25 percent lower cost with two nodes in it compared to a half-populated four-way system.
The third member of the X6 family is the Flex x880 X6 node, which is available for the PureFlex converged systems. This Flex x880 V6 node is a double-width server module that has two Xeon E7 v2 sockets, 48 remembrance slots, and two disk bays. Two or four of these nodes can be lashed together with a NUMA link inside of the Flex System chassis to create progressively larger shared remembrance systems.
Yost says that IBM has seed System x3850 X6 machines out at early adopter customers now for final testing and that this machine will ship in the first quarter in the wake of Intel’s launch of the Xeon E7 v2 processor. The Flex x880 X6 nodes will be ready for sale in the first quarter as well. IBM is starting to region System x3950 X6 machines with beta customers now, and these boxes are expected to be generally available in the second quarter.
